Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (So glorify with the praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness. Indeed, He was ever Accepting of repentance)
Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: When you see this sign: [An-Nasr: 3] it was expected that it would be
So thank Allah for this blessing, and praise Allah for it. Victory and opening—what is the servant's reward for that? Gratitude. That is what is expected. But the expected turned out to be contrary to what we expect. He said: [An-Nasr: 3] And this is analogous to the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Al-Insan: 23-24] It was expected that [Al-Insan 76:23] it would be said: So thank your Lord for this revelation, and fulfill its right, and the like of that. But he said:[Al-Qalam 68:48] Indicating that he would suffer harm through conveying this Qur'an and spreading it among the nation. [An-Nasr 110:3] So the answer appeared contradictory to the condition, but when you reflect, you know the wisdom. The meaning: That when the victory of Allah and the opening come, your end is near, so nothing remains for you except glorification and praise: [An-Nasr 110:3] Meaning: Glorify Him with a glorification accompanied by praise. And the glorification: Exalting Allah the Exalted above what is unworthy of His majesty. And the praise: It is praising Him with perfection along with love and magnification. Combine the exaltation with the praise. [An-Nasr 110:3] Meaning: Ask Him for forgiveness. So Allah the Exalted commanded him with two things: The first command: Glorification accompanied by praise.
The second matter: Seeking forgiveness. And it is: Asking for forgiveness. And forgiveness: Allah the Exalted covering His servant's sins along with erasing them and passing over them. This is the ultimate desire of the servant; because the servant is abundant in sins, he needs forgiveness. If Allah does not cover him with His mercy, he perishes. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (None of you will enter Paradise by his deeds,They said: Nor you, O Messenger of Allah? He said: Nor I, except that Allah covers me with His mercy) O Allah, cover us with Your mercy. No one enters Paradise by his deeds ever; because if you wanted to place your deed in comparison to one of the blessings—one single blessing—the blessings would encompass it. So how can it be a reward by which you enter Paradise? For this reason, some of the people of knowledge said in a poem of his:
If my gratitude is a grace from Allah, then for it, gratitude is obligatory in like manner.
So how can the attainment of gratitude be achieved except by His grace, even if the days lengthen and life continues
Allah the Exalted said: [An-Nasr: 3] Meaning: He has not ceased, Mighty and Majestic, to be Accepting of repentance for His servants. So if you seek His forgiveness, He accepts your repentance. This is the meaning of the surah. But the surah has a great significance that only the intelligent perceive. For this reason, when 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) heard that people were criticizing him for bringing 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas close to him despite his young age, while not bringing close to him his like among the young men of the Muslims, and 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was one of the most just of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, he wanted to make it clear to the people that he had not favored Ibn 'Abbas in anything. So he gathered the senior Muhajireen and Ansar on one day, along with 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas, and said: What do you say about this surah: (When the victory of Allah and the opening come)? So they interpreted it according to what is apparent only.So he said: What do you say, O Ibn 'Abbas? He said: O Commander of the Faithful! This is the end of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The meaning is as if Allah is saying to him: [An-Nasr: 1-2] So your mission has ended, and nothing remains for you except departure. And you were not created for the world to enjoy it and remain in it for a long time. You were created for a mission that has ended. So it is the end of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).So 'Umar said: By Allah, I know nothing of it except what you know.
So it became clear from that the virtue of Ibn 'Abbas and his distinction, and that he possessed of intelligence and knowledge of the intent of Allah the Exalted what many people lacked.
When this surah was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)—who was the most worshipful of people to Allah and the most mindful of Allah—He used to frequently say in his bowing and prostration: (Glory be to You, O Allah, our Lord, and praise be to You. O Allah, forgive me) So we say: Glory be to You, O Allah, our Lord, and praise be to You. O Allah, forgive us our sins, and our excess in our affairs, and make firm our feet, and give us victory over the disbelieving people.
Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: When you see this sign:
Then exalt [Him] with praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him
فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُSo thank Allah for this blessing, and praise Allah for it. Victory and opening—what is the servant's reward for that? Gratitude. That is what is expected. But the expected turned out to be contrary to what we expect. He said:

إِذَا جَاءَ نَصْرُ اللَّهِ وَالْفَتْحُ * وَرَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَدْخُلُونَ فِي دِينِ اللَّهِ أَفْوَاجاًSo it became clear from that the virtue of Ibn 'Abbas and his distinction, and that he possessed of intelligence and knowledge of the intent of Allah the Exalted what many people lacked.
