The Obligation of Paying Zakah on Used Gold

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Your Eminence! Is zakah due on used gold, or is it not?
Used gold, or gold that is used and lent out, or gold that remains unused except on special occasions, all of it is subject to zakah, according to the stronger and correct opinion.

And some scholars say: There is no zakah on used gold.

But the correct view is: It is subject to zakah if it reaches the nisab, which is (85) grams, whereas anything less than that is not subject to zakah. And the evidence for the obligation of zakah on it is: What Muslim narrated in his Sahih from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no one who possesses gold or silver and does not pay its due, except that on the Day of Resurrection, plates of fire will be made for him, and they will be heated in the Fire of Hell, and he will be branded with them on his side, his forehead, and his back. Every time they cool, they will be replaced, on a day whose measure is fifty thousand years, until judgment is rendered between the servants, and then he will see his path: either to Paradise or to the Fire".

And we ask now: Is a woman who has jewelry considered a possessor of gold or not?Everyone says: She is a possessor of gold. And what indicates the generality is: What Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated.
That a woman came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and her daughter had two thick gold bracelets on her hand -Meaning: Two thick bracelets -So he said to her: "Do you pay zakah on them? She said: No.
He said: Would it please you that Allah would make them bracelets of fire for you? So she took them off and gave them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: They are for Allah and His Messenger."
And this is a warning, and there is no warning except for the abandonment of an obligation.

And likewise, one of the Mothers of the Believers asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about jewelry she had: "Is it a treasure? He said: If it reaches the amount where its zakah is due and it is purified, then it is not a treasure".

And someone might say: What is the amount of zakah? We now know that if gold jewelry reaches the nisab, then zakah is due on it, so what is the amount of this zakah? We say: Its amount is one quarter of a tenth,Meaning: (٢.
5%) so in one thousand riyals it is (25) riyals, and in ten thousand riyals it is (250) riyals, and in one hundred thousand riyals it is (2500) riyals, so it is a small portion, and praise be to Allah, and perhaps this is part of its blessing, and it is certainly part of its blessing;Because there is a great reward in zakah:
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grainsمَثَلُ الَّذِينَ يُنفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ حَبَّةٍ أَنْبَتَتْ سَبْعَ سَنَابِلَ فِي كُلِّ سُنْبُلَةٍ مِائَةُ حَبَّةٍ
[al-Baqarah: 261], and in it is also blessing for the wealth, for zakah has never mixed with wealth except that it blessed it, and perhaps this jewelry will be blessed and protected from harm due to the payment of zakah from it.
This is in addition to the reward that a person earns, so if you now give the zakah of the jewelry, [25] riyals from the thousand, do you think that these twenty-five riyals are a loss and a deficit? No.
Rather, it is a profit, so the twenty-five riyals will be on the Day of Resurrection one riyal for seven riyals, and with each riyal (100) riyals, so the riyal becomes (700) riyals, so you will obtain on the Day of Resurrection the reward of seven hundred riyals for every riyal, while in this world, if you save the twenty-five riyals from the thousand riyals, perhaps your not paying it will be a cause for this jewelry to be lost, or to be damaged, or to be broken, or to be stolen, or for someone to borrow it and then deny it, or something similar to that.
So what I love for my Muslim brothers is that they do not think that charities or zakahs are wasted, but rather they are good, for you have nothing of your wealth except what you spent for Allah, and the rest will be for others.
