Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (But Allah made faith beloved to you and adorned it in your hearts)
Then Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Hujurat 49:7] One might ask: What is the connection between His saying: [Al-Hujurat 49:7] and His saying: [Al-Hujurat 49:7]?
That you obey Him—Meaning: the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)—in what contradicts you; because Allah made faith beloved to you, so you prioritize obeying the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in what contradicts you; because Allah made faith beloved to you and adorned it in your hearts, and this is a correction (istidrak) of the most eloquent kind,Meaning: but if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) contradicts you in many matters that you desire, you will not hate that, nor will you contradict him, nor will you attack the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) because of it. (But Allah made faith beloved to you) meaning: He made it beloved in your hearts.[Al-Hujurat 49:7] meaning: He made you love it, and He adorned it in your hearts such that you do not abandon it after you have performed it. This is because a person’s doing of a thing out of love may be a transient love, but when a thing is adorned for him, the love becomes firm and lasting. And for this he said:[Al-Hujurat 49:7] in the heart, [Al-Hujurat: 7] also in the heart, but when a beloved thing is adorned for a person, he continues with it and remains steadfast upon it.
Then Allah the Exalted said:
but Allah has endeared to you the faith
وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ حَبَّبَ إِلَيْكُمُ الْأِيمَانَbut Allah has endeared to you the faith
وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ حَبَّبَ إِلَيْكُمُ الْأِيمَانَAnd know that among you is the Messenger of Allah. If he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would be in difficulty
وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ فِيكُمْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوْ يُطِيعُكُمْ فِي كَثِيرٍ مِنَ الْأَمْرِ لَعَنِتُّمْThat you obey Him—Meaning: the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)—in what contradicts you; because Allah made faith beloved to you, so you prioritize obeying the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in what contradicts you; because Allah made faith beloved to you and adorned it in your hearts, and this is a correction (istidrak) of the most eloquent kind,Meaning: but if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) contradicts you in many matters that you desire, you will not hate that, nor will you contradict him, nor will you attack the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) because of it. (But Allah made faith beloved to you) meaning: He made it beloved in your hearts.
