How the Disbelievers Fit the Believers

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Allah the Exalted and Sublime says:
Our Lord, make us not [objects of] torment for the disbelieversرَبَّنَا لا تَجْعَلْنَا فِتْنَةً لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا
[Al-Mumtahanah: 5] How can the Muslim be a fitnah (trial) for those who disbelieved?
He becomes a fitnah for those who disbelieved by the oppression of the disbelievers over him; for the oppression of the disbelievers over the believer is a fitnah, since they are tormented by it and sin because of it, so it becomes a fitnah for them.
It is also possible that the meaning of
[objects of] torment for the disbelieversفِتْنَةً لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا
[Al-Mumtahanah: 5] is: that they fit us away from our religion,Like His saying, the Exalted:
Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire.
[Al-Buruj: 10] .
The verse includes both meanings; for the two meanings do not contradict each other,And the rule in exegesis is: If a verse is capable of two meanings that do not contradict each other, then it is obligatory to apply it to both meanings.
