Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (Indeed, the retribution of your Lord is severe)

Then Allah the Exalted said:
(12) Indeed, the vengeance of your Lord is severe. (13) Indeed, it is He who originates [creation] and repeats.إِنَّ بَطْشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيدٌ * إِنَّهُ هُوَ يُبْدِئُ وَيُعِيدُ
[Al-Buruj: 12-13].
Retributionبَطْشَ
[Meaning: His taking [them] with punishment is severe,As Allah the Exalted said:
Know that Allah is severe in penalty and that Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.اعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ
[Al-Ma'idah: 98] So the retribution of Allah—Meaning: His vengeance and taking [them]—is severe and great; but it is for those who deserve it. As for those who do not deserve it, the mercy of Allah the Exalted is more encompassing. How often Allah forgives sins! How often Allah conceals defects! How often Allah averts calamities! And how often He bestows blessings! But when He takes the wrongdoer, He does not let him escape; As the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (Indeed, Allah gives respite to the wrongdoer until when He takes him, He does not let him escape) and he recited the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And thus is the seizure of your Lord when He seizes the cities while they are committing wrong. Indeed, His seizure is painful and severe.وَكَذَلِكَ أَخْذُ رَبِّكَ إِذَا أَخَذَ الْقُرَى وَهِيَ ظَالِمَةٌ إِنَّ أَخْذَهُ أَلِيمٌ شَدِيدٌ
[Hud: 102].

And on this basis, we say: ((The retribution of your Lord)) [Al-Buruj: 12] meaning: upon those who deserve the retribution. As for those who do not deserve it, Allah the Exalted treats them with mercy, generosity, and bounty, and the mercy of Allah the Exalted precedes His anger.
