Major sins are forgiven by Hajj

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Your Eminence, the Shaykh! We said regarding Hajj: Indeed, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) forgives sins through it, and the pilgrim returns as if he were born on the day his mother gave birth to him. The hadith in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Companion who stipulated that what had come before be forgiven for him: “Do you not know that Islam demolishes what came before it, and that Hajj demolishes what came before it?” Is there evidence in this that major sins are likewise forgiven in Hajj? While some say, as if it were consensus: Indeed, major sins are not forgiven except through repentance!

This is the apparent meaning of the hadith: “Whoever performs Hajj and does not commit lewdness or transgression—if he observes this condition—returns as if he were born on the day his mother gave birth to him.” And likewise the hadith of 'Amr ibn al-'As to which you referred: “And that Hajj demolishes what came before it.” Its apparent meaning is generality, and that it demolishes everything except disbelief, for which repentance is necessary.

And this which you mentioned, some scholars mentioned it, saying: If the five daily prayers do not expiate sins unless major sins are avoided, and they are greater than Hajj, more excellent, and more beloved to Allah, then Hajj is all the more so.But we say: This is the apparent meaning of the hadith, and Allah the Exalted has matters in His decree, and there is no analogy in reward. Praise be to Allah, you have reckoned this with your Lord, so perhaps Allah (Mighty and Majestic) will grant it to you.
