The Lawfulness of Repentance from Major Sins
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
He has a second question in which he says: I am fasting and praying now, but a period of my youth passed by in which I did not fast or pray, and I committed sins from among the major ones. Do I have any repentance, for I drank intoxicants and committed unlawful sexual intercourse? Do I have any expiation, even if it is fasting for a full year? Because these wrongs were before my marriage. Please give us a ruling, may Allah guide you.
Answer: The door of repentance, my brother, is still open until now, for repentance wipes out what came before it. Allah the Exalted said:[Surat al-Nur:31], and He the Exalted said:[Surat al-Tahrim:8], the verse. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Ibn Majah 4250Da’if (Darussalam), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 121, so if you have repented to your Lord and regretted what you did, such as abandoning the prayers, drinking intoxicants, committing unlawful sexual intercourse, and other things, then Allah will accept your repentance, (Glorified and Exalted is He). It is obligatory for you to be sincere in that, to regret your past bad deeds, to resolve not to return to them, to abandon them, and to guard against them out of fear of Allah and hope for His reward. And Allah will accept your repentance, (Glorified and Exalted is He). Beware of despair and beware of having a bad opinion of Allah. No, have a good opinion of your Lord. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says in what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated from Him:in what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated from Him:Sunan Ibn Majah 3822Sahih (Darussalam) So hold fast to a good opinion of your Lord (Glorified and Exalted is He)For He has informed us that He accepts the repentance of those who repent. So you must hold a good opinion of your Lord (Exalted and Majestic is He) and hope for His bounty and kindness. You must be sincere in the repentance that has come from you: you must feel genuine remorse, abandon the sins, and resolve with a sincere determination not to return to them. If you have any rights owed to people, return them to them. By doing this, Allah will accept your repentance and forgive all your sins (Glorified and Exalted is He)Yes.
