The ruling on one who did not form the intention to fast in Ramadan

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
If a person fasted the first day of Ramadan but did not form the intention, does he have to make up this day, given that he did not know it was Ramadan and did not eat or drink?
This is a matter on which there is scholarly disagreement. Some of them say: He does not have to make up this day; rather, he should abstain from the time he learned of it, and there is no obligation on him to make it up. This is the choice of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him). And some of them said: Rather, he should make it up, as this is the more cautious and preferable course.
