The ruling on teaching in institutes that deal with banks
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Your Eminence! In the name of Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. May Allah increase your reward, O Shaykh! And may He guide us and you, if Allah wills, as well as all those present and listening. In fact, there is an observation before the question. I tried many times from Riyadh to call by phone, but I was unable to, and some of my colleagues were as well. So I hope that if possible, the phone connection period could be extended so that people from outside the region can call.
So you may consider this later, if Allah wills.
My question is: This question is for me and some of my colleagues at work, and it is related to our work. We are university professors teaching management, marketing, and similar subjects. We were asked to cooperate with the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority. The Authority has an institute called the "Banking Institute" where students or employees—specifically employees of commercial banks—study.Provides funding for the institute: The Authority, along with the institute, in addition to the fact that there are study fees paid for the employees by the banks, we were asked at the university to cooperate with the institute for the purpose of teaching.
So our question is: Regarding the ruling on teaching in such an institute? Knowing that this teaching, of course, does not relate to financial or usurious aspects, but rather to administrative aspects.
And the question revolves around the fees paid by the banks as well, in which the Authority—the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority—participates, in addition to the fees they take from the banks.
So our question is: Regarding our job in such an institute, as cooperation with them in teaching! And may Allah reward you with good.
Do you cooperate in sin and transgression? The questioner: That is exactly what we are asking about, O Shaykh! The Shaykh: I am asking you! I do not know,Do they say: Come, teach us about riba, and how to exploit it, and how to obtain it?The questioner: I mentioned to you, O Shaykh! that it is in two aspects: in the administrative aspects, we teach them how to manage work, and how to deal with people,Meaning: We do not teach them the usurious aspects and how to manage the process of riba; But the question is: That you will receive a wage,Meaning: The wage originally came from the payment of study fees! The Shaykh: There is nothing wrong with it; because paying study fees is not injustice or coercion, but it is by the choice of the student, is it not?The questioner: Yes.
The Shaykh: So, it is taken from them willingly.
The questioner: So does this mean that we separate what if they teach them usurious transactions and financial aspects, and teach them something else related to the job?The Shaykh: Even teaching usurious banks or usurious contracts, if you are teaching them in order to clarify their prohibition, and that this is not permissible, then that is good,Meaning: It contains clarification of the truth.
The questioner: But even if I know that this person, I will teach him the usurious aspects, we take the other side; but I know that he will apply them, and deal in them, even if I clarified it to him?The Shaykh: No.
If you know that he will apply them, do not teach him. Any permissible work that you know its owner—or you are convinced that its owner—uses it in what is forbidden, do not do it.
The questioner: And if it is from non-usurious aspects.
The Shaykh: There is nothing wrong with it, I do not see anything wrong with it.
So you may consider this later, if Allah wills.
