Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (So they were unable to rise up)

Allah the Exalted said:
And they were unable to arise, nor could they defend themselves.فَمَا اسْتَطَاعُوا مِنْ قِيَامٍ وَمَا كَانُوا مُنْتَصِرِينَ
[Surat al-Dhariyat: 45] meaning: they were unable to stand up, (and they were not victorious) meaning: some of them were not able to help others; rather, they all perished completely.
And thus does Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) do with those who lied to His messengers (peace and blessings be upon them), except that the exterminating punishment was lifted from this Ummah, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated to his Lord (Glorified and Exalted is He) that He not take them by a general decree—Meaning: by a general punishment—but they were tested with something else, which is that some of them kill others, and some of them take others as captives. And the matter came to pass; for this Ummah was not struck by a general punishment as the nations before it were struck, but it was struck by Allah making their wrath among them since the time of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, as they differed over 'Uthman and 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both), and the trials have continued to succeed one another until our day.
Then this Ummah, whose wrath is among them, is not only the Ummah of response, but the Ummah of response and the Ummah of invitation,And for this reason we say: the trials and afflictions that have occurred on earth, in its east and west, among the disbelievers and non-disbelievers, are the result of sins, and the punishment of this Ummah is that Allah makes some of them taste the wrath of others.
