Question:
A questioner asks about the exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Surah al-Tawbah: 1].
Answer:
This verse was revealed at the end of the life of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) had made a known treaty with some of the polytheists, while with others he had an open-ended treaty, and with others he had no treaty at all. So Allah revealed this verse containing a disavowal of the polytheists and the casting aside of the treaties to them; for this reason, the Exalted said:[At-Tawbah 9:1] “So travel freely in the land for four months” the verse [Surah al-Tawbah: 1-2].
So Allah the Exalted commanded His Messenger to disavow them. Whoever had a treaty was to remain under it until its term expired, and whoever had an open-ended treaty or no treaty at all, Allah granted them four months.
And he sent al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) , and 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) , and those with them in the ninth year of the Hijrah to announce during the season: Whoever has a treaty with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is to remain under it until its term expires, and whoever has no treaty or has an open-ended treaty, he has four months, after which he will be at war with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) unless he enters into Islam.
