Ruling on making up the prayers of one who was in a coma
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A man was involved in an accident and was in a coma for approximately one month, and Allah restored him to health. He asks: Does he have to make up the prayers? The Shaykh: If a person is involved in an accident and loses consciousness for a long or short period, he does not have to make up the prayers; this is because his mind was absent without his choice. This is unlike a person who becomes intoxicated and loses his mind for two or three days, for whom it is obligatory to make up the prayers. The difference between the two is that the intoxicated person lost his mind due to his own action, whereas the one who lost consciousness due to an accident or severe illness does not have to make up the prayers; because this occurred without his choice. This is the stronger and correct opinion. However, if this coincided with the days of Ramadan, he must make up the fasts. The difference between fasting and prayer is apparent, similar to the difference between them in the case of menstruation, where the woman makes up the fasts but does not make up the prayers.
