How to Know the Onset of Dawn
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
O Shaykh! We love you, if Allah wills, for the sake of Allah. I have a question about the onset of dawn,The dawn means: specifically, what indicates its arrival? May Allah reward you with good!
First: I say: May Allah love you as you love us for His sake. We ask Allah the Exalted to make our love for one another for His sake and our hatred for His sake, so that we hate those whom Allah and His Messenger hate and love those whom Allah and His Messenger love.
If you are in a village with no lights, you can know the dawn yourself, provided there is no cloud or haze.
And Allah has set a clear limit for this, He said: [al-Baqarah:187] meaning: wives on the nights of fasting, [al-Baqarah:187] , so if you go out to the open land and there are no lights before you, and no haze or cloud, look at the horizon. When you see this horizontal thread from north to south, this whiteness, that is the dawn. Then pray, and refrain from eating and drinking if you intend to fast. And when you do not see it, you are still in the night.
It is a white thread in the horizon, at the bottom of the sky, white and not the Milky Way. As for when you cannot see the dawn, whether due to clouds, haze, lights, or when you are between houses, the current timing is five minutes early for the dawn, specifically, throughout the year, meaning: if you want to hit the dawn exactly, with Allah’s permission, delay by five minutes.
And some of the brothers say: No.
Rather, it is delayed even more,And he says: I went out several times on nights with no moon, no haze, and no clouds, and I found that it is delayed by a quarter of an hour. It appears to me that this is long -Meaning: very long -Meaning: it makes the difference between the current written timing and the actual dawn ten minutes or a quarter of an hour. But I think this is an exaggeration. The five minutes, according to the astronomers’ estimate, they say: that one must delay the dawn adhan by five minutes.

فَالْآنَ بَاشِرُوهُنَّSo now, have relations with them and seek that which Allah has decreed for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]
