How to identify the true dawn?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : O Shaykh, we love you in Allah, if Allah wills. And I have a question about the arrival of the dawn, meaning, what indicates its arrival? May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : Yes, first: I say, may Allah love you in the One in whom you love us. And we ask Allah the Exalted to make all of us such that our love is for the sake of Allah and our hatred is for the sake of Allah; that we hate whom Allah and His Messenger hate, and we love whom Allah and His Messenger love. As for the dawn, are you in a town or a village, or in the open desert?

The questioner : In a village.

The Shaykh : Then you cannot see the dawn because of the lights.

The questioner : In the open desert, meaning in a farm.

The Shaykh : And there are no lights around you or anything else. In this case, you can know the dawn yourself, if there is no cloud or haze. You know it yourself.

The questioner : The dawn that appears.

The Shaykh : Indeed, Allah has set a limit for us, saying:
Now have intercourse with them فَالْآنَ بَاشِرُوهُنَّ
meaning, the wives during the nights of fasting
So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allah has decreed for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night] فَالْآنَ بَاشِرُوهُنَّ وَابْتَغُوا مَا كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ
[Al-Baqarah 2:187]
So if you go out to the open desert and there are no lights in front of you, and there is no haze or cloud, look at the horizon. When you see this horizontal thread from north to south, yes, this whiteness, this is the dawn. Then stop eating.
