Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (Then He rose above the Throne)]

Allah the Exalted said:
Then He rose above the Throneثُمَّ اسْتَوَى عَلَى الْعَرْشِ
[al-Hadid: 4] (Istawa) means: He rose above it, in a manner befitting His Majesty, which we cannot liken to His creation; for Allah is not like anything, and the Throne is a great creation, whose magnitude is known only to the One who created it (Mighty and Majestic). And it came in the hadith: (Indeed, the seven heavens and the seven earths are in the Footstool like a ring cast into a vast expanse of land) The ring: a ring of the armor made of iron rings: (And the excess of the Throne over the Footstool is like the excess of the vast expanse over this ring) So: its magnitude is known only to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). And we have no right to ask: What is the material of this Footstool; is it of gold or of silver, or of pearl? We have no right to speak about this.It is a great Throne as Allah described it:
the Lord of the Great Throne."رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ
[al-Tawbah: 129]
Honorable Owner of the Throne,ذُو الْعَرْشِ الْمَجِيدُ
[al-Buruj: 15] A very, very great Throne, whose magnitude is known only to Allah. Allah rose above it for the perfection of His dominion (Exalted and Majestic is He).You may find in some books: (Rose above the Throne) means: He took possession of it. Do you find it so? The one among you who has looked into some of the books of the Asha'irah and their like sees this. And this is a distortion of the words from their places, and a statement about Allah without right and without knowledge; for if He created the heavens and the earth, then the Throne rose, we would say: He took possession of the Throne. Before the taking of possession, whose was the Throne?! Look at the falsity of this. Then we say: Allah took possession of everything.Do we say: Did He take possession of the earth? We cannot say this. Therefore: It is necessary that (Istawa) means rose above. How did He rise? We do not know; Allah knows best.
