Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (Know that Allah gives life to the earth after its death)
Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: [Al-Hadid: 17] .
"Know" is a command to know this important matter, which is that Allah gives life to the earth after its death,Meaning: that you find the earth dry with no vegetation in it, so Allah sends down rain upon it, and it grows, comes to life, and flourishes. When we know this, and we are aware of it and witness it, we use it as evidence of the power of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) to give life to the dead. For people are alive now, then they die, then they are resurrected on the Day of Resurrection. The One who is able to give life to the earth after its death is able to give life to bodies after their death for the sake of the Reckoning and the recompense; for it is not wise for Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) to create a creation, command them and forbid them, and make the blood and wealth of those who do not respond lawful, and then the result is that the human being simply dies.
Rather, it is necessary—O my brothers—for a life that is the true life,As Allah the Mighty and Majestic said: [al-'Ankabut:64] The meaning of (al-hayawan) is: the true life after which there is no death, and it is not meant by al-hayawan the animals or beasts,The intended meaning of al-hayawan is: the complete, perfect life.
You are now seeing the earth dry with not a single green leaf in it, then Allah sends down rain, and it grows and flourishes. The One who is able to make these dry branches green and growing is able to give life to the dead,And in one word, Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Nazi'at: 13-14] And He (Mighty and Majestic) said: [Ya-Sin: 53] [Ya-Sin: 82] .
[Ali 'Imran 3:118] And I give you an example: If Allah sends down rain, and the earth grows, and the beasts are sated, and the atmosphere becomes pleasant, this is among the effects of His mercy. We use this as evidence of the mercy of Allah, and we use what Allah has created in the universe, such as the sun, the moon, and the stars, and what Allah the Exalted has created on earth, such as the mountains, the rivers, and others, as evidence of the perfection of the wisdom of Allah (Mighty and Majestic); for when you reflect upon it, you will find in it wisdom that astounds the intellect.
So (al-ayat) is the plural of ayah, which is a sign,Meaning: the signs indicating the perfection of the power and dominion of Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
"La'all" here is for the purpose of causation, not for hope, although in the Arabic language it often comes for hope, but here it is for the purpose of causation, for hope is not possible with regard to the right of Allah, since hope is the seeking of something that involves a degree of difficulty, but it is not conceivable to hope with regard to the right of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), but (la'all) comes for the purpose of causation,Meaning: so that you may understand, and the intended meaning of "understand" here is the understanding of guidance,Meaning: that you understand with an understanding by which you are guided, and it becomes a proof for you of what is in good.
Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said:
Know that Allah gives life to the earth after its lifelessness. We have made clear to you the signs; perhaps you will understand.
اعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُحْيِي الْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا قَدْ بَيَّنَّا لَكُمُ الْآياتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَKnow
اعْلَمُواRather, it is necessary—O my brothers—for a life that is the true life,As Allah the Mighty and Majestic said:
And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life
وَإِنَّ الدَّارَ الْآخِرَةَ لَهِيَ الْحَيَوَانُYou are now seeing the earth dry with not a single green leaf in it, then Allah sends down rain, and it grows and flourishes. The One who is able to make these dry branches green and growing is able to give life to the dead,And in one word, Allah the Exalted said:
(13) Indeed, it will be but one shout, (14) And suddenly they will be [alert] upon the earth's surface.
فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجْرَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ * فَإِذَا هُمْ بِالسَّاهِرَةِIt will not be but one blast, and at once they are all brought present before Us.
إِنْ كَانَتْ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً فَإِذَا هُمْ جَمِيعٌ لَدَيْنَا مُحْضَرُونَHis command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, "Be," and it is.
إِنَّمَا أَمْرُهُ إِذَا أَرَادَ شَيْئاً أَنْ يَقُولَ لَهُ كُنْ فَيَكُونُWe have certainly made clear to you the signs
قَدْ بَيَّنَّا لَكُمُ الْآياتِSo (al-ayat) is the plural of ayah, which is a sign,Meaning: the signs indicating the perfection of the power and dominion of Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
