Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted, "But the one who fears [Allah] will be reminded," to His saying, "Then he will not die therein nor live," from Surat al-A'la.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows:
This is the fifty-fourth session of our weekly gatherings with our brothers every Thursday. This day was the third of Dhul-Qa'dah in the year 1414 AH. The topic of the introduction to this session is discussing the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, in Surat al-A'la:
But the one who fears [Allah] will be reminded, and the most wretched will avoid it.
and so on. Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, commanded His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) to remind, so He said:
So remind, if the reminder should benefit;
[Al-A'la 87:9]
Then He said:
But the one who fears [Allah] will be reminded, and the most wretched will avoid it.
Thus, the Exalted clarified that people are divided into two categories after the reminder.
The first category is the one who fears Allah, Mighty and Majestic, meaning he fears Him with a fear based on knowledge of the greatness of Allah, the Creator, Exalted and Majestic is He. So when such a person is reminded with the verses of his Lord, he is reminded, as Allah the Exalted said in describing the servants of the Most Merciful:
And those who, when reminded of the verses of their Lord, do not fall upon them deaf and blind.
[Al-Furqan 25:73]
So whoever fears Allah and is afraid of Allah, when he is reminded and admonished with the verses of Allah, he takes heed and benefits.
As for the second category, He said:
And the most wretched will avoid it.
meaning: he avoids this reminder and does not benefit from it. The most wretched (al-ashqa) here is a superlative form of wretchedness (shaqaw), and it is the opposite of happiness (sa'adah), as in Surat Hud:
So as for those who were wretched, they will be in the Fire, and as for those who were happy, they will be in Paradise.
So the most wretched, may Allah protect us from that, who is characterized by wretchedness, avoids the reminder and does not benefit from it. The most wretched is the one who has reached the peak of wretchedness, and this is the disbeliever. For the disbeliever is reminded but does not benefit from the reminder. For this reason, He said:
(12) [He] who will [enter and] burn in the greatest Fire, (13) Neither dying therein nor living.
[Al-A'la 87:12-13]
the one who will burn in the Fire described as the Greatest, which is the Fire of Hell (Jahannam), because the fire of this world is small in comparison to it. It is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)
This fire of yours is one part from seventy parts of the fire of Hell
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2590Hasan (Darussalam)
meaning: the Fire of the Hereafter exceeds the fire of this world by sixty-nine parts.
The intended meaning is: the fire of this world in its entirety, it is not a specific fire, but the most severe of the fire of this world. For the Fire of the Hereafter exceeds it by sixty-nine parts. For this reason, He described it by saying:
The Greatest Fire.
Then when he burns in it, he will not die therein nor live. The meaning is: he will not die a death that brings him relief, nor will he live a happy life. Otherwise, they are alive in reality, but they are alive being tormented
Every time their skins are roasted through We will replace them with other skins
[An-Nisa 4:56]
as Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said, and they call out
And they will call, "O Malik وَنَادَوْا يَا مَالِكُ
[Az-Zukhruf 43:77]
and he is the keeper of the Fire
let your Lord put an end to us
[Az-Zukhruf 43:77]
meaning: let our Lord kill us and relieve us from this torment
He will say, "Indeed, you will remain."
[Az-Zukhruf 43:77]
but there is no relief, and it is said to them:
We had certainly brought you the truth, but most of you, to the truth, were averse.
[Az-Zukhruf 43:78]
.
This is the meaning of His saying:
he will neither die therein nor live.
[Taha 20:74]
because it may be difficult for some people to understand how a person can be neither alive nor dead. A person is either alive or dead. It is said: he will not die therein a death that brings him relief, nor will he live a life in which he is happy. So he is, may Allah protect us from that, in torment, hellfire, and severity. He wishes for death but it does not come to him. This is the meaning of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Neither dying therein nor living.
[Al-A'la 87:13]
.
We have previously discussed the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(14) He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself (15) And mentions the name of his Lord and prays.
[Al-A'la 87:14-15]
and we clarified that the intended meaning of His saying:
purified تزكى
is: in his own soul, meaning He purified it and brought it out from the filth of shirk (associating partners with Allah) to the purity of tawhid (the oneness of Allah). The rest of the discussion on the remainder of the surah will come, if Allah wills, in order to make room for the brothers who are asking questions. So we begin with the right side.
