Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: “Know that the life of this world is but play and amusement and adornment”
We begin this session, as is our custom, with what Allah Mighty and Majestic facilitates in the way of explaining His perfect words. Allah Blessed and Exalted is He, in describing the state of this world, mentioned five things about it: that it is play, amusement, adornment, boasting, and competition in wealth and children. [Al-Hadid: 20] This is the reality of this world.
Then Allah gave us an example, for examples bring meanings closer, since an example means measuring a meaning against something tangible. [Al-Hadid: 20] (Ghays) means: rain by which the earth grows and by which hardship is removed, [Al-Hadid: 20] meaning: the vegetation that grows from it, and it delighted them—Meaning: they found it pleasing—and the disbelievers are those who disbelieve in Allah Mighty and Majestic; for the disbeliever is delighted by this world, rejoices in it, is pleased by it, and his heart is attached to it. He has no concern except what he sees of its adornment and amusement. Thus, he is the one who (was delighted by the disbelievers) meaning: the disbelievers in Allah.
meaning: the vegetation of this rain. Why were the disbelievers specified? Because the disbelievers are those who find this world pleasing, are delighted by it, and whose hearts are attached to it. As for the believers, they are the opposite; they are concerned only with what is in the interest of the Hereafter,And it was said: that the disbelievers here refer to the farmers, but this is not correct, because applying the term disbelievers to farmers is very rare, if it is even valid,And those who say: that they refer to the farmers, they say: because the disbeliever disbelieves the seed—Meaning: he covers it in the earth and plows the earth over it—for it to come out, but what we established first is the correct view: that they refer to the disbelievers in Allah.
[Al-Hadid: 20] after it appears and the disbelievers are delighted by it and find it pleasing and are amazed by it, [Al-Hadid: 20] meaning: it dries up and withers, [Al-Hadid: 20] after it was green and growing, it becomes yellow and melting, [Al-Hadid: 20] meaning: it crumbles and breaks; because it dried up. So what was the result for this crop? Destruction and disappearance. This is the state of this world: it dazzles a person with its blessings, palaces, vehicles, wealth, children, wives, and so on, and then it crumbles.
How many a rich person was comfortable in his family, enjoying himself in his home, in his vehicle, in his clothes, and in all his circumstances, and then he becomes poor, and his world crumbles. If he did not die and his world crumbled by his departure from this world, then one of two things must happen: either this world leaves you, or you leave it. This is the state of this world, and this is a matter in which there is no doubt in reality, but souls are heedless with it; a person is distracted from such a real matter, and he thinks that everything is fine and considers the disappearance of this world, or his disappearance from it, unlikely.
As for the Hereafter, listen to it, He said: [Al-Hadid: 20] for the disbelievers, [Al-Hadid: 20] for the believers,So which of the two is more worthy: Should a person prefer this world, whose end is destruction and disappearance, or the Hereafter? He should prefer the Hereafter; this is reason. For if you prefer this world, there is severe punishment in the Hereafter, and if you prefer the Hereafter, there is forgiveness from Allah and pleasure: forgiveness for sins and pleasure for good deeds. [Al-Hadid: 20] This sentence contains a restriction, its method being negation and affirmation, which is the highest method of restriction. The life of this world is nothing but a commodity, and nothing else, and a commodity of delusion: a person is deluded by it, plays and amuses himself, rejoices and becomes arrogant, and then it disappears.
All these sentences and these descriptions, Allah Mighty and Majestic—He knows best—wants them to make a person disdain this world and desire the Hereafter.
And I am asking you: If a person disdains this world and desires the Hereafter, will he miss any of the blessings of this world?
No, even if he becomes poor, he will not miss the blessings of this world. And the evidence for this from the Qur'an and the Sunnah is the saying of Allah Mighty and Majestic: [An-Nahl: 97] a life of tranquility in which the mind is at rest,He did not say: We will increase his wealth and his children and his palaces. [An-Nahl: 97] And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified that in his saying: “How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for all his affairs are good, and that is not for anyone except the believer. If adversity strikes him, he is patient, and it is good for him, and if prosperity strikes him, he is grateful, and it is good for him.”

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children
Then Allah gave us an example, for examples bring meanings closer, since an example means measuring a meaning against something tangible.
like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers
كَمَثَلِ غَيْثٍ أَعْجَبَ الْكُفَّارَ نَبَاتُهُwhose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers
Its growth
نَبَاتُهُpleases the tillers; then
It withers
You see it yellowing
فَتَرَاهُ مُصْفَرّاًthen it becomes [scattered] debris
How many a rich person was comfortable in his family, enjoying himself in his home, in his vehicle, in his clothes, and in all his circumstances, and then he becomes poor, and his world crumbles. As for the Hereafter, listen to it, He said:
And in the Hereafter is severe punishment
وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ عَذَابٌ شَدِيدٌforgiveness from Allah and approval
And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.
All these sentences and these descriptions, Allah Mighty and Majestic—He knows best—wants them to make a person disdain this world and desire the Hereafter.
