The Shaykh’s Note: On the issue of repeating 'Umrah in a single journey.

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
As for what follows, it is said: Woe to the scholars from the common people, woe to the scholars from the common people. Let us clarify the phrase: woe to the scholars from the common people, because the common people understand from the scholars things other than what they mentioned. A few days ago, a case came to us regarding a man who said that if a person has intercourse with his wife during the day in Ramadan, he is rewarded for it. However, after we said this, it cannot be said—may Allah reward him with good—that he went to one who is attributed with knowledge and inquired from him, and it became clear that this speaker had erred in understanding what the scholar said. This is a common occurrence. Among such matters is that we spoke about repeating 'Umrah and said that it is not from the way of the Salaf for a man, after performing an 'Umrah, to go out on this journey to al-Tan'īm or to al-Ja'ranah or to other places in the permissible area (hal) to perform a second 'Umrah. We said this is not from the way of the Salaf, and we continue to say so. Our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Makkah in the Year of the Conquest and remained there for nineteen days, yet he did not go out to al-Tan'īm to perform an 'Umrah. However, when the Expedition of Ta'if occurred and he returned and stopped at al-Ja'ranah, he entered Makkah at night from al-Ja'ranah and performed the 'Umrah because he had come to Makkah from outside. It is not recorded from the Salaf that they went out of Makkah to perform an 'Umrah except in one specific case, a case of individual obligation (fard 'ayn) that we affirm if it occurs. That is the case of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who arrived with the rest of the wives of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during the Farewell Pilgrimage. She entered the state of ihram for 'Umrah, intending thereby to perform tamattu'. When she reached Saraf, she began menstruating. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to her while she was crying and said to her:As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 16:119 Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered her to combine Hajj with 'Umrah, so she became one who combines them (qarinah) and did not perform any acts other than those of Hajj, because one who combines them does not perform any acts other than those of Hajj. When the people finished Hajj, she asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to perform an 'Umrah so that she could perform the acts of both Hajj and 'Umrah, as is the case for one who performs tamattu'. She persisted with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in this matter, so he ordered her brother 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr and said to him: Take your sister out of the sacred precinct (Haram) so that she may enter the state of ihram for 'Umrah. So 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr took her to al-Tan'īm, because it is the closest part of the permissible area (hal) to Makkah, and she performed 'Umrah from al-Tan'īm. Her brother 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr was with her, yet he did not perform 'Umrah. If the Makkah 'Umrah had been prescribed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have guided 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr, who actually went to al-Tan'īm, to do so, or 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr, if this had been known among them, would have entered the state of ihram for 'Umrah as well, since he had gone to al-Tan'īm, to obtain its reward. The fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not guide him to it, and that he himself did not do it, indicates that it is not prescribed and was not known among the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). This is what we say. Therefore, whenever someone asks us: if he has now performed an 'Umrah and wants to go out to al-Tan'īm or to another part of the permissible area (hal) to perform an 'Umrah for his father or mother, we tell him: My brother, this is not prescribed. It has also come to us in previous sessions that Allah the Exalted says: [Hud 11:7] And work is divided; work is done through following. So whatever a person does in his work, the more he follows the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his way, the better his work is. Good work is achieved by complete sincerity and complete following of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
