What is the ruling on changing the gray hair in the beard, mustache, and head, and if it is a recommended practice, why do we see many scholars not doing it?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The questioner says: O honorable Shaykh, what is the ruling on changing the gray hair in the beard, mustache, and head? If it is a recommended practice, why do we see many scholars not doing it?

The Shaykh : Changing gray hair to a color other than black is a recommended practice (sunnah) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded, saying:
Change this white hair and avoid black. غيروا هذا الشيب وجنبوه السواد
However, many scholars do not do this because of the difficulty of monitoring it, as a person must constantly check the hair, otherwise its original color will become apparent and clear. For this reason, Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) said regarding taking hair, meaning the hair of the head: "It is a recommended practice; if we were able to manage it, we would do it, but it involves trouble and expense". So he refrained from it due to the trouble and expense. This is the excuse of some scholars for not doing it. Our Shaykh, Abd al-Rahman al-Sa'di (may Allah have mercy on him), did not dye his beard with anything. The Mufti of this land, Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him), also did not dye his gray hair, nor did his brothers, nor many of the scholars we have seen. However, there is no doubt that the recommended practice (sunnah) is established, whether the scholars do it or not. A person should change his gray hair, but not to black. As for black, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Keep away from black. جنبوه السواد
