The questioner : He says:The questioner : Your Eminence, you mentioned the punishment and bliss of the grave, and praise be to Allah, we believe in this, but I would like to inquire about the saying of Allah the Exalted:
They will say, "O woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place?" [The reply will be], "This is what the Most Merciful had promised قَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا مَنْ بَعَثَنَا مِنْ مَرْقَدِنَا هَذَا مَا وَعَدَ الرَّحْمَنُ
[Ya-Sin 36:52]
to the end of the verse, and the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic:
from our sleeping place مِنْ مَرْقَدِنَا
Does this indicate that they are sleeping, or that there is punishment and bliss in the grave?

The Shaykh : There is no doubt that the grave is either a garden from the gardens of Paradise or a pit from the pits of the Fire. It has been reported that it is expanded for the believer to the extent of his sight, and it is constricted for the disbeliever until his ribs are crushed, may Allah protect us. As for their saying:
Who has raised us up from our sleeping place? مَنْ بَعَثَنَا مِنْ مَرْقَدِنَا
[Ya-Sin 36:52]
, a person’s sleeping place is the place where he lies down, and it does not necessarily mean that he is sleeping, just as you might say, for example, “This is my sleeping place,” and you lie down in it without sleeping. Some scholars say that the punishment is lifted from them between the two blasts, so they think that the punishment has ceased and ended. Then they are raised, may Allah protect us, from their graves and they witness more of the punishment than the punishment of the grave. For this reason, they say:
O woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place? يَا وَيْلَنَا مَنْ بَعَثَنَا مِنْ مَرْقَدِنَا
[Ya-Sin 36:52]
. The summary is that it should be said: “Sleeping place” is a name for what? For the place of lying down, and it does not necessarily mean that one who lies down in it is sleeping. This is one view. Or it can be said, as some scholars have said: The punishment is lifted from them between the two blasts until they think that it has been completely lifted from them. Then, when they are raised, they say:
O woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place? يَا وَيْلَنَا مَنْ بَعَثَنَا مِنْ مَرْقَدِنَا
[Ya-Sin 36:52]
Yes.
