I addressed—may Allah guide you—in the sermon and the gathering the courtyards and the rest houses, and I did not speak, may Allah guide you, about the houses and the invasion of satellite dishes into them.

The questioner : He says:The questioner : Your Eminence, you addressed—may Allah guide you—in the sermon and the gathering the courtyards and the rest houses, and you did not speak, may Allah guide you, about the houses and the invasion of satellite dishes into them. So, here is a father who has grown-up children who forced their father to bring in a satellite dish. They brought it in with their own money, and the father approved of them and enabled them to use it, even though he is one of those who prays in the Rawdah and does not want it, but he was coerced. What is your advice to him and his children? There are women and children in the house?

The Shaykh : In truth, I spoke about the courtyards and the rest houses because it reached me that they have become widespread in a strange and rapid manner, until they reached about two thousand in a city like Unayzah. This is very difficult. As for what is in the houses, that has been the case for a long time. And I say: This man who agreed with his family—whether his sons, daughters, or wives—to bring in this satellite dish and listen to whatever they wish and look at whatever they wish, I see that he has erred and that he is accountable for it. He is the owner of the house and is able to prevent it. I advise him now to do one of two things: either be a direct supervisor of this satellite dish so that no one looks at anything in it except what is beneficial, or break it. He must do so, whether the children are pleased or not, because he is accountable for it. He cannot sell it now; perhaps he can sell it, but if he sells it, he is selling it to people who will use it in disobedience, and thus he would be assisting in the disobedience of Allah. There is no way to repent from it except to break it. If he says, "I have lost, for example, one thousand or two thousand riyals," we say: Praise be to Allah. Loss in what brings one closer to Allah is a gain, and Allah will replace it with something better for you. Destroying wealth for the sake of the pleasure of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, in anger at oneself and as retribution against oneself, is among the traditions of the messengers. —The brother goes right or left? Come on, yes, you, you, what did you say? No, no, destroying wealth to please Allah and in anger at oneself for the sake of Allah is among the traditions of the messengers. Sulayman (peace be upon him) said:
Indeed, I gave preference to the love of good [things] over the remembrance of my Lord until the sun disappeared into the curtain [of darkness]." إِنِّي أَحْبَبْتُ حُبَّ الْخَيْرِ عَنْ ذِكْرِ رَبِّي حَتَّى تَوَارَتْ بِالْحِجَابِ
[Sad 38:32]
meaning: Did my love of wealth distract me from the remembrance of Allah until the sun was hidden by the veil, meaning: until it set?
Return them to me رُدُّوهَا عَلَيَّ
And that good which distracted him from Allah were horses, stallions, on which he would strive in the path of Allah:
[He said], "Return them to me," and set about striking [their] legs and necks.
[Sad 38:33]
Why? In anger at himself and to please his Lord, so that he would not return to it a second time. And here is the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who prayed one day in a cloak that one of his Companions, Abu Jahm, had gifted to him. He looked at its emblems while he was praying; its emblems means its lines. He looked at them once. When he finished his prayer, he said:
Take this garment of mine to AbuJahm
Sunan Abi Dawud 4052Sahih (Al-Albani)
Return it to him. Why? He said:
as it (the Khamisa) has diverted my attention from the prayer
Sahih al-Bukhari 373
And he had not looked at it more than once, but it distracted him. However, so that his Companion's heart would not be broken, he said:
get me his Inbijaniya (a woolen garment without marks)
Sahih al-Bukhari 373
So that he would not say that he returned it to him. Bring me the cloak of Abu Jahm, and they brought it to him. The important thing is that I say to the owner of this family: Fear Allah. Either stay by this satellite dish night and day so that the family does not look at what is not permissible, or what? Or break it, and Allah will replace it for you. Yes.
