Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : He says:The questioner : The honorable Shaykh, Allah the Exalted and Majestic says:
And they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْتُونَ مَا آتَوْا وَقُلُوبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ
[Al-Mu'minun 23:60]
and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
None of you should die but hoping only good from Allah لا يموتن أحدكم إلا وهو يحسن الظن بالله
Sahih Muslim 2877c
The servant is commanded to fear Allah the Exalted, and likewise, a person is commanded not to be pleased with his own deeds. He says: “I pray and I give zakah.” How do you reconcile these statements with this verse?

The Shaykh : Allah Mighty and Majestic says:
And they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْتُونَ مَا آتَوْا وَقُلُوبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ
[Al-Mu'minun 23:60]
meaning: they give what they have given
and their hearts are fearful َوقُلُوبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ
meaning: fearful that it will not be accepted from them, fearful that it will not be accepted from them, not doubting the generosity of Allah Mighty and Majestic, but fearing because of their sins. A person fears that what he has given of wealth will not be accepted, either because of his self-satisfaction, or because of how he gave the charity, or because the wealth is forbidden, or something similar to that. Does any one of us assert that his charities are accepted? No, everyone fears. As for the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
None of you should die but hoping only good from Allah لا يموتن أحدكم إلا وهو يحسن الظن بربه
Sahih Muslim 2877c
the intended meaning of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) by that is to encourage a person to do good deeds until death, because a person cannot have a good opinion of his Lord while he is defying Him with disobedience. If he had a good opinion of Allah while defying Him with disobedience, he would be heedless. Having a good opinion of Allah means that you do what is the cause of what you believe about Allah the Exalted. For this reason, some people err by being negligent and then saying: “I have a good opinion of Allah.” No, having a good opinion of Allah means: pray, and say: “Indeed, Allah will accept my worship.” This is if you look at the generosity of Allah. If you look at yourself, I fear that I may be falling short, so you are between fear and hope. Yes.
