The Meaning of the Saying of Allah the Exalted: “And the sky and the night visitor, and what do you know what the night visitor is? The piercing star,” and the evidence for swearing by them.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : So His saying, (Exalted and Majestic is He):
And the sky and the night visitor والسماء والطارق
: The waw is for the oath. Allah the Exalted swore by the sky because of its greatness, its height, its vastness, and its strength. Allah the Exalted said:
And constructed above you seven strong [heavens] وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا
[An-Naba 78:12]
meaning strong. And He said:
And the heaven We constructed with strength وَالسَّمَاءَ بَنَيْنَاهَا بِأَيْدٍ
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:47]
meaning with strength
And We are indeed expanding it وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ
So Allah swore by the sky because of its greatness.
and the star that comes down. والطارق
: Is the night visitor the one who visits his family at night? Or the guest who visits his host at night? No. The night visitor, Allah the Exalted described it in a way that emphasizes it:
And what makes you know what the star that comes down is? وما أدراك ما الطارق
. What thing am I informing you about regarding this night visitor? What is it? And what does it visit? So He clarified it, (Mighty and Majestic), clarifying that it is
The piercing star. النجم الثاقب
, the star. Is it one specific star? Or is the meaning the genus of stars? The apparent second option is that the meaning is the genus of stars, not one specific star, because every star, however small, is piercing, meaning it pierces the darkness with its light. Sometimes the light of the planets reaches the earth. And we have witnessed that, and the people of the desert who do not have electric lighting witness it. You find them seeing the light of the planets shining on the earth, especially the bright, large planets. So what is meant by the piercing star? What is meant? Is it one specific star? Or all the stars? All the stars. Perfect. - Rest - The meaning is all the stars. So they are piercing; they pierce the darkness with their light. And they are also piercing: they pierce the devils who listen to the news of the sky and throw it to the soothsayers, as Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
Except one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame. إلا من استرق السمع فأتبعه شهاب ثاقب
[Al-Hijr 15:18]
. The devil is pierced: he is perforated until he is burned. These devils who steal hearing descend with what they hear from the sky to the soothsayers. And the soothsayers: they are those who tell people what will happen in the future, whether it is general or specific. So the soothsayer says: It will happen, it will happen, for example, in the coming year such and such of calamity and misfortune. Or he says to a specific person: O so-and-so, such and such will befall you in the coming year. So the soothsayer is the one who informs about the unseen in the future, whether these unseen matters are general or specific. The devils descend with what they heard from the sky to the soothsayers. The soothsayer takes what he heard and then adds to it other words, as some of the Salaf said: “He lies with it a hundred lies”. So people talk about this news. Then when something happens that he had predicted, he claims that he knows the unseen. And he says: He knows what will be, and he steals the minds of people. And it is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that
or who goes to a fortuneteller and believes what he says, he has disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad. من أتى كاهنا فصدقه بما يقول فقد كفر بما أنزل على محمد
Sunan Ibn Majah 639Hasan (Darussalam)
. What person comes to a soothsayer and says: O so-and-so, tell me what the future will be. He says: Your future is good, or he says: Your future is bad. If he believes him, he has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad. Why? Because Allah the Exalted said:
Say, "None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah قُلْ لَا يَعْلَمُ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ الْغَيْبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ
[An-Naml 27:65]
. So whoever believes anyone in knowledge of the unseen has lied to this verse. And lying to a part of the Qur'an, or a verse of the Qur'an, or a letter of the Qur'an is disbelief and apostasy from Islam. And we in this time have been afflicted, we have been afflicted with such people or those similar to them. And people have also been afflicted with illusions and imaginations that have no basis. So you find one, if he is struck by the slightest thing, even a temporary chest tightness, his chest tightens with a temporary incident. Then he says: He has been struck by jinn, or sorcery, or the evil eye. And these imaginations do not cease in his mind until they become fixed and become a reality or close to reality. For this reason, it is obligatory for us not to believe these illusions and to turn away from them. And when we turn away from them, they will disappear by the permission of Allah, because all the bad whispers that Satan throws into the heart of a person, if the person obeys the command of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) in them, he is saved from them. Did you not know that Satan comes to the person and says: Who created such? Who created such? Who created such? Until he says to him: Who created Allah? - We ask Allah for safety -. And at that time, the person must seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan. And it ends, and he turns away and does not look back. The cause of these imaginations that happen to many people, and Allah knows best, is that many people have turned away from the prescribed invocations that protect the person from devils, such as: The Verse of the Throne. The Verse of the Throne, if a person reads it at night, a protector from Allah remains with him, and no devil approaches him until he becomes morning. For this reason, we should teach our children, the boys and the girls. We memorize it for them and teach it to them whenever the night comes with its darkness, so that it becomes a guard for them. If you hired a person to guard your children for one night and gave him a thousand riyals, it would be easy for you. But now, the guarding of the Lord, (Mighty and Majestic), for your children if they read this verse is greater and greater.
Whoever reads it in a night, a protector from Allah will remain over him, and no Shaytan will approach him until he becomes morning. من قرأها في ليلة لم يزل عليه من الله حافظ، ولا يقربه شيطان حتى يصبح
.
The second cause: idleness, idleness, idleness. This is a killer. And how much idleness there is among us! Idleness in our youth, in our girls, and in our elders. A killing idleness. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Two favors that many of the people squander are health and free time. نعمتان مغبون فيهما كثير من الناس : الصحة والفراغ
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2304Sahih (Darussalam)
. And if a person is idle and does not have knowledge. And does not have work that moves his body, moves his mind, and moves his thought, matters will come upon him one after another. And try, you will find. Work in knowledge, in wealth, in a craft. You will not see these whispers. Leave the work, and the whispers will come upon you and rush upon you.
And among the causes: weakness of reliance upon Allah, (Mighty and Majestic). Reliance upon Allah is weak with many people; they do not rely except on material causes and forget the Lord, (Mighty and Majestic). They forget the One who says to a thing, “Be,” and it is. And they rely on material matters. If a person is struck with a cold, and the cold is the lightest of diseases. Does he prepare himself, be patient, attach his heart to Allah, and wait for relief from Allah and health from Allah. And say that this affliction that happened to me is a reward and expiation for sins? Or as soon as he is struck, he goes to the hospital? Yes? Most people are the second. Most people are the second. And so when reliance became weak in them, they came to rely on purely material causes. But if they relied on Allah. And said: The jinn are more humble than to be tyrannical over humans, except that humans, if they neglect their protection, the jinn overcome them. But if they perform the protection as required, Allah, (Mighty and Majestic), protects them.
And among the causes also: that Allah, (Mighty and Majestic), shows His servants that this world is not a home of luxury and bliss. A person does not touch hardship in it. Rather, it is necessary, it is necessary for there to be trouble, it is necessary for there to be annoyance. It is not possible for the world to be pure for a person in every aspect. Even the richest of people, the strongest in authority, and the most numerous in soldiers, life must be annoyed for them. Even the most worshipful of people, misfortunes must befall them. But the believer, even if misfortunes befall him, they are what? Good for him.
The believer, if hardship strikes him, he is patient, and that is better for him; and if prosperity strikes him, he is grateful, and that is better for him. المؤمن إن أصابنه الضراء صبر فكان خيرا له، وإن أصابته السراء شكر فكان خيرا له
. But the non-believer, if hardship befalls him, he becomes annoyed and panics. And perhaps he does the forbidden actions or says the forbidden words, along with what is in his heart of dissatisfaction with the decree of Allah, this is the non-believer. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
He is not one of us who tears his garments, strikes his cheeks, and cries with the cry of the Days of Ignorance. ليس من من شق الجيوب ولطم الخدود ودعا بدعوى الجاهلية
Sunan Ibn Majah 1584Sahih (Darussalam)
. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) feared these people: tearing the garment: from sadness and dissatisfaction and lack of patience. Striking the cheek: because they were in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, if someone was sad about something, one would stand and strike his cheek. And he would call with the call of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. What is the call of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance? Woe and destruction. He says: O my woe, and destruction. How am I struck with this, with this misfortune? And the like of that.
We return to the noble verse, the piercing star: and what is the meaning of piercing? Yes. Please.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Not piercing, piercing.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : You did well. Explain. The piercing: the one that pierces the darkness with its light and penetrates from the highest point to the earth. The piercing: the one that pierces the devils that listen to what happens in the sky.
