I read in one of the books that when a person dies and the washer enters upon him, he lets out a cry that is heard by all creation except the two heavy ones.

The questioner : Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. And after that, I read in one of the books that when a person dies and the washer enters upon him, he lets out a cry that is heard by all creation except the two heavy ones, and when his turban is removed from his head, he lets out a cry that is heard by all creation except the two heavy ones. The reason for this is that his body cannot bear to be touched by anyone. Is this statement correct, O honorable Shaykh? Please give us a ruling, and may you be rewarded.

The Shaykh : This statement is not correct and has no basis in the Book of Allah or in the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Rather, what is established is that when a person is buried, two angels come to him and ask him about his Lord, his religion, and his Prophet. Then,
Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in worldly life and in the Hereafter
[Ibrahim 14:27]
“My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and my Prophet is Muhammad”. Then a caller from the heavens calls out: “Your servant has spoken the truth.” As for the disbeliever or the hypocrite, he says: “Ugh, ugh, I do not know! I heard people saying something, so I said it,” because faith did not enter his heart, may Allah protect us from that. Then he is struck with an iron mallet—that is, with an iron hammer—and he lets out a cry that is heard by everything except humans and jinn. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
and if they heard it they would fall down unconscious
Sahih al-Bukhari 1380
This hadith affirms the punishment of the grave, which is indicated by the apparent meaning of the Qur’an and the explicit meaning of the Sunnah, and the Muslims have agreed upon it in their prayers. In the Qur’an, Allah the Exalted says regarding the family of Pharaoh:
The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], "Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment."
[Ghafir 40:46]
And if you could but see when the wrongdoers are in the overwhelming pangs of death while the angels extend their hands, [saying], "Discharge your souls! Today you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation for what you used to say against Allah other than the truth and [that] you were, toward His verses, being arrogant."
[Al-An'am 6:93]
And if you could see when the wrongdoers are in the throes of death, and the angels are stretching out their hands, [saying], “Bring out your souls! Today you will be recompensed with the punishment of humiliation for what you used to say about Allah other than the truth, and you used to be arrogant about His verses.” His saying:
the Day اليوم
“the Day” contains the demonstrative article of presence, meaning this day on which they are in the throes of death, and it is clear evidence for the affirmation of the punishment of the grave. And His saying, the Exalted:
And if you could but see when the angels take the souls of those who disbelieved... They are striking their faces and their backs
[Al-Anfal 8:50]
.
As for the Sunnah, it has been transmitted in a mass-transmitted manner regarding this, and all Muslims say in their prayers:
let him seek refuge with Allah from four things: From the torment of Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the Fitnah (tribulation) of Masihud-Dajjal.
Sunan Ibn Majah 909Sahih (Darussalam)
So the punishment of the grave is established by the indication of the Book and the Sunnah, and there is no doubt in it. For this reason, it is obligatory for a person to be cautious of what may be a cause of the punishment of the grave. In the two Sahihs, from the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by two graves and said:
They are being punished but they are not being punished for anything major.
Sunan Ibn Majah 349Sahih (Darussalam)
That is, in a matter that is difficult for them.
One of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine, while the other used to go about with calumnies (to make enmity between friends).
Sahih al-Bukhari 218
Then he took a fresh palm branch, split it in two, and planted one in each grave. They said: “Why did you do this, O Messenger of Allah?” He said:
It is hoped that their punishment may be abated till those two pieces of the leaf get dried.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6052
.
And on this occasion, I would like to remind some people who place some fresh branches on the graves of their relatives, citing this hadith as evidence. There is no indication in it of that, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not place it on the grave of every deceased person; rather, he placed it on the graves of these two men who were being punished. Do you, O human being, think that the one on whom you placed this branch is being punished in his grave? If you think that, then you have suspected him of evil, and suspecting a Muslim of evil is forbidden if his outward appearance is one of righteousness. Therefore, placing these fresh branches on graves is contrary to the Sunnah and is an accusation against the deceased that he is being punished. We ask Allah for safety.
