The Shaykh : And there are specific hadiths regarding the punishment of the grave for a specific matter. Among them is the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both)
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) passed by two graves and said, "Indeed, they are being punished"
The sentence here is emphatic. Who knows the types of emphasis in it? With your right hand, may Allah reward you!
The student: In and Lam.

The Shaykh : Well done, that is correct. Rest
They are being punished but they are not being punished for anything major.
Sunan Ibn Majah 349Sahih (Darussalam)
meaning in a matter that is not difficult for them, but rather in an easy matter
One of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine, while the other used to go about with calumnies (to make enmity between friends).
Sahih al-Bukhari 218
Be aware that these are among the causes of the punishment of the grave. Not cleaning oneself from urine and not performing istibra' (ensuring cleanliness) from it are among the causes of the punishment of the grave. If a splash of urine hits your garment and you are negligent about it and do not purify it, this is among the causes of the punishment of the grave. If you relieve yourself and do not perform istinja' (cleaning) in the prescribed manner with water or stones, this is among the causes of the punishment of the grave. Now, if one does not clean himself from feces? Is it like urine or not? It is like it, without a doubt, there is no difference; both are najasah (ritually impure).
and the other used to walk about spreading malicious gossip.
Sunan Ibn Majah 347Sahih (Darussalam)
Namimah (talebearing) is conveying a message from one person to another in order to cause corruption between them. We spoke about it the night before last, so namimah is among the causes of the punishment of the grave, may Allah protect us.
Then he took a fresh date palm branch, split it in two, and planted one in each grave. They said, "O Messenger of Allah, why did you do this?" He said, "Perhaps it will lighten their punishment as long as they do not dry out" ثم أخذ جريدة رطبة فشقها نصفين وغرز في كل قبر واحدة، قالوا لم صنعت هذا يا رسول الله؟
La'alla indicates hope, meaning I hope that Allah will lighten their punishment as long as they do not dry out, meaning until they dry out. This is a type of intercession by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for these two graves that are being punished.
