The questioner : With us, after the prayer, a person stands up to recite al-Fatihah and ends by saying "to the presence of the Prophet". What is the ruling on this, O honorable Shaykh? May Allah bless you?
The Shaykh : The ruling on this is that it is an innovation among the innovations that were not practiced in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his successors. Every matter that is innovated in the religion does not benefit its doer; rather, it harms him, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned against it:Sunan al-Bayhaqi 17:1232 This act, which may occur after the prayer, such as reciting al-Fatihah or the Verse of the Throne in a loud voice for the attendees to hear, is undoubtedly one of the innovations from which one is forbidden and from which people are commanded to refrain. Instead, they are ordered to perform what the Sunnah has prescribed of the dhikr that follows the prayers. When a person completes his prayer with the taslim, and says: then he glorifies Allah by saying "Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar" thirty-three times each, which makes ninety-nine, and he completes the hundredth by saying "La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir". If he wishes, he may say: "Subhan Allah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah the same, and Allahu Akbar thirty-four times". If he wishes, he may say: "Subhan Allah ten times, Alhamdulillah ten times, and Allahu Akbar ten times". If he wishes, he may say: "Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar" twenty-five times, making it a hundred. He recites the Verse of the Throne, [Al-Ikhlas 112:1], [Al-Falaq 113:1], [An-Nas 114:1]. Such dhikr is the prescribed dhikr that has come in the Sunnah. As for what has not come in the Sunnah, a person should not innovate it; rather, he is forbidden from it, because every innovation is misguidance.
