The questioner : What is the ruling on a person who eats in the month of Ramadan believing it is night, but it turns out to be day?
The Shaykh : The ruling in this case is that he owes nothing, because he was ignorant. We have mentioned in one of the sessions that if a fasting person consumes something that breaks the fast while ignorant, he does not have to make it up, based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:286] So Allah said: And based on the hadith of 'Adi ibn Hatim, who placed two cords, one black and one white, under his pillow and would eat while looking at them. When he distinguished the white from the black, he stopped. He mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet did not order him to make it up. And based on the hadith of Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both), that they broke their fast during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a cloudy day, and then the sun appeared, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not order them to make it up. This indicates that one who eats while ignorant of the time, thinking it is night, and then it turns out to be day, does not have to make it up. Likewise, if he was ignorant of the ruling.
The questioner : May Allah bless you, Shaykh Muhammad, and may Allah reward you for what you have presented to us and to the honorable brothers who are listening.
