The questioner : I was afflicted with a disease, which is kidney failure, and I was transferred to the United States of America by the state (may Allah preserve it), and I underwent dialysis and treatment for two years. During the dialysis, blood appeared continuously, and I did not fast the blessed month of Ramadan because of the illness. The doctor also forbade me from fasting. My first illness was high blood pressure, which caused inflammation in my left kidney. The month of Ramadan of the year 1404 AH arrived while I was ill, and the doctor also forbade me from fasting. I opposed the doctor's advice and fasted for the full month of Ramadan. After that, the month of Shawwal came, and I went to the doctor for some tests, and he told me that my kidney had failed. I said to him, "Everything is from Allah the Exalted." Now I want to know if there is a sin upon me with Allah the Exalted? First, because I opposed the doctor's advice who preserved my life. As for today, praise be to Allah, the kidney was transplanted in the year 1406, on the 27th of the 11th month. Since the day of the kidney transplant, I have been using medication for twenty-four hours, and the doctor's advice remains not to fast because the kidney has not healed and returned to its normal state. So, please inform us, may Allah reward you with good. Knowing that from the day the kidney was transplanted, two years have passed and I have not fasted Ramadan in these years, I ask Allah the Exalted to inform you. May Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : The answer to this is that we say to this brother that it is obligatory for a person to preserve his health, indeed it is obligatory for him to preserve his health as much as he can. And it is never permissible for a person to leave the dispensation of Allah the Exalted, which He has bestowed upon His servants. And Allah the Exalted said:
and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days ومن كان مريضاً أو على سفر فعدة من أيام أخر
[Al-Baqarah 2:185]
So when you were afflicted with this illness in which fasting has an effect, delaying its cure or increasing it for you, you should have taken the doctor's advice, and there is no blame on you in this. If you had left fasting until you were finally cured, that would have been better for you and more appropriate. My advice to you and to my listening brothers in such matters is to take the dispensation of Allah the Exalted, and to move from fasting to feeding, if this illness is one that is not expected to be cured.
The scholars divided illness with regard to fasting into two categories:
One category is that which is expected to be cured, so its owner breaks his fast and makes up the fasts after the cure.
And another category is that which is not expected to be cured, so its owner feeds one poor person for every day, and this feeding is a substitute for the fasting.
And as long as your condition is still in the stage of recovery, it is better for you to wait until you are finally cured and able to fast without harm, then make up what was missed. And I ask Allah for you immediate healing and assistance in His obedience.
