The questioner : I am a nineteen-year-old girl who prays, praise be to Allah, and wears the hijab, praise be to Allah. My problem is that I have been suffering for a long time from stomach pain, and it turned out to be an ulcer. I was being treated but did not benefit from it, and despite this, I fasted throughout that period. However, this year my illness intensified, and I presented myself to a doctor and continued the treatment until the month of Ramadan arrived. I tried to fast, but I was unable to fast because I felt pain that tore me apart due to hunger. It is worth noting that the doctor did not object to fasting, but when I informed him of the pain, he advised me to break my fast when I felt that pain. Now my health has improved, praise be to Allah, and I no longer take the medication except when necessary. However, I am unable to remain without food for a long period. It is worth noting that the doctor advised me to eat on a timed schedule so that I do not get hungry, as that affects my health. Also, my illness has no cure that ends it. My question is: What is the ruling in the Shari'ah, in your opinion, O honorable Shaykh, if I do not fast next Ramadan? And is it valid for me to expiate for every day I broke my fast? And is this permissible or not? Please inform us, may you be rewarded.
The Shaykh : If the illness is not expected to be cured, then the ruling for the sick person is the same as the ruling for the old man who is unable to fast. Both are obligated to feed one poor person for every day, and fasting is not obligatory for them due to their inability to do so and the harm it causes. Allah the Mighty and Majestic said in the verses of fasting:[Al-Baqarah 2:185] If this illness persists in you and you are unable to fast, and as it has occurred, its removal is not expected in the future, then feed one poor person for every day, and that is sufficient in place of fasting.
