Fasting of the sick person who is unable to fast and whose illness is not expected to end

Fatwa number ( 21274 )
Q: I inform you that I suffer from a kidney disease, and the doctor has forbidden me from fasting on the grounds that it would affect my health, and that I am unable to fast ; because he has prescribed dialysis for me twice a week. I have been undergoing dialysis twice a week for a month and a half. I consulted another doctor in Riyadh , who prescribed some treatment and a diet for me. I have recovered, praise be to Allah. I have broken my fast for three years without fasting Ramadan. I fasted this year with difficulty, as I consulted the doctor and he said to me: "Fast ten days and then consult me again, either to fast the rest of the month or I will tell you to break your fast." I consulted him again and he said to me: "Complete the month." I hope you will inform me about the years I did not fast. Do I have to make up these months, even though I paid expiation for each month? And if making up the fast is obligatory for me, do I make up the three months in one year, or one month each year? May Allah preserve you.
A: If the situation is as you described, and you fed people for the past years because a trustworthy doctor informed you that fasting would harm your health and that you
are unable to make up the fast in the future – then your feeding is valid, and your obligation is discharged, if Allah wills. And if your health has improved and the doctor advised you to fast, then you must fast in the future, and feeding does not suffice for you. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
