Some of the Sufis have claimed that the people of the graves possess miracles, and they cited the saying of Allah the Exalted in Surat al-Kahf: (And as for the wall, it was for two boys...)

The questioner : Some of the Sufis have claimed that the people of the graves possess miracles, and they cited the saying of Allah the Exalted in Surat al-Kahf: [Al-Kahf 18:82] the verse. They also said: "If their father had not been righteous, the treasure would not have come out," and they counted this among the miracles for him after his death. O honorable Shaykh, I hope for an explanation and clarification to remove the ambiguity and to refute the false call of the Sufis who have led the servants astray. Shaykh Muhammad also has a note at the end of his message saying: We are in Sudan, living in a society where shirk, superstitions, and religious innovations are prevalent. We ask Allah for deliverance, and your program plays a great role in this deliverance, and many families have turned to it. We ask for your guidance. May Allah reward you with good?
The Shaykh : This is a great question, and the answer requires elaboration with the help of Allah Mighty and Majestic. We say: The people of the graves are divided into two categories:
The first category is one who died upon Islam and people speak well of him. Good is hoped for him, but he is in need of his Muslim brothers to supplicate for him for forgiveness and mercy. He falls under the general meaning of the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Hashr 59:10]. He himself does not benefit anyone, for he is a dead body that cannot ward off harm from himself or from others, nor can he bring benefit to himself or to others. He is in need of the benefit of his brothers, while he is not a source of benefit for them.
The second category of the people of the graves is one whose actions lead to open sinfulness that expels one from the religion, such as those who claim to be close friends of Allah, who know the unseen, who cure diseases, and who bring good and benefit through means that are not known by sense or by the Shari'ah. For those who died upon disbelief, it is not permissible to supplicate for them or to pray for their mercy, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:[At-Tawbah 9:113-114]. They do not benefit anyone nor harm him. It is not permissible for anyone to attach themselves to them. If it happens that someone sees miracles for them, such as seeing light in their graves, or a pleasant smell coming from them, or something similar, and they are known to have died upon disbelief, then this is from the deception and delusion of Satan to test these servants with the people of these graves.
I warn my Muslim brothers not to attach themselves to anyone other than Allah Mighty and Majestic, for He, Glorified and Exalted is He, is the One in whose hand is the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and to Him returns all matters. No one answers the distressed except Allah, and no one removes evil except Allah. Allah the Exalted said:[An-Nahl 16:53].
My advice to them is also that they should not follow anyone in their religion without following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Ahzab 33:21] and His saying: [Ali 'Imran 3:31].
It is obligatory for all Muslims to weigh the actions of one who claims to be a close friend of Allah by what has come in the Book and the Sunnah. If it agrees with the Book and the Sunnah, then it is hoped that he is among the close friends of Allah. If it contradicts the Book and the Sunnah, then he is not among the close friends of Allah. Allah the Exalted has mentioned in His Book a just and fair scale for knowing the close friends of Allah, where He said:[Yunus 10:62-63]. So whoever is a believer and pious, he is a close friend of Allah. And whoever is not so, he is not a close friend of Allah. And if he has some faith and piety, he has some share of being a close friend. Nevertheless, we do not assert this for a specific individual, but we say in general: Everyone who is a believer and pious is a close friend of Allah, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Yunus 10:62-63].
Let it be known that Allah Mighty and Majestic may test a person with something like these matters. A person may attach himself to a grave, supplicate to its occupant, or take some of its soil to seek blessing from it, and he may get what he wants. This may be a test from Allah Mighty and Majestic for this man, because we know that this grave does not answer supplication, and that this soil does not become a cause for removing harm or bringing benefit. We know this due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Ahqaf 46:5-6] and He said: [An-Nahl 16:20-21]. There are many verses in this meaning indicating that whoever is called upon other than Allah will not answer the supplication and will not benefit the supplicant. However, the desired thing may be obtained when supplicating to other than Allah as a test and trial. We say that this thing happened at the time of the supplication, i.e., at the time of supplicating to this one who was called upon other than Allah, not by his supplication. There is a difference between a thing happening by means of something and a thing happening at the time of something. We know with certainty that supplicating to other than Allah is not a cause for bringing benefit or warding off harm, in the many verses that Allah Mighty and Majestic mentioned in His Book. But the thing may happen at the time of this supplication as a test and trial.
Allah the Exalted may test a person with the causes of disobedience to know, Glorified and Exalted is He, who is a servant of Allah and who is a servant of his desires. Do you not look at the people of the Sabbath from the Jews, where Allah forbade them to catch fish on the day of the Sabbath, so Allah Mighty and Majestic tested them. He tested them, and the fish would come on the day of the Sabbath in great abundance, and on days other than the Sabbath they would disappear. So the time became long for them, and they said, "How can we deprive ourselves of these fish?" Then they thought, estimated, and considered, and they said, "We will make a net and place it on Friday and take the fish from it on Sunday." So they proceeded with this action, which is a trick to circumvent the prohibitions of Allah. So Allah the Exalted turned them into apes, despised. Allah the Exalted said:[Al-A'raf 7:163] meaning We inform them [Al-Baqarah 2:59]. And He, Mighty and Majestic, said: [Al-Baqarah 2:65-66]. So look how Allah made these causes easy for them on the day they were forbidden, or how Allah made these fish easy for them on the day they were forbidden from catching them. But they, may Allah protect us, did not have patience, so they resorted to this trick to circumvent the prohibitions of Allah.
Then look at what happened to the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), where Allah Glorified and Exalted tested them while they were in the state of ihram with the game that is forbidden for one in ihram. It was within their reach, but they, may Allah be pleased with them, did not dare to take any of it. So Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Ma'idah 5:94]. The ordinary game and the flying game were within their reach; they could catch the game with their hands, catch the ordinary game with their hands, and reach the flying game with spears, making it very easy for them. But they, may Allah be pleased with them, feared Allah Mighty and Majestic, so they did not proceed to take any of the game. And thus, a person must, when Allah makes the causes of a forbidden action easy for him, fear Allah Mighty and Majestic and not proceed with this forbidden action, and know that Allah making its causes easy for him is from the category of testing and trial. So let him refrain and have patience, for the outcome is for the righteous.
And as for the wall, it belonged to two
