The questioner : I read a hadith one day to the effect that the Noble Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever recites the Qur'an and then forgets it will come on the Day of Resurrection with his tongue cut off من قرأ القرآن ونسيه يأتي يوم القيامة وهو أجذم
And I am, in truth, a person who forgets quickly and cannot remember anything except with great difficulty. This is what frightens me. I have tried to seek treatment and have presented myself to several doctors. So what do you advise me to do? May Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : We say that forgetting the Qur'an is divided into two categories:
The first is that its cause is the reciter's turning away, negligence, and laxity. In this case, he may be sinful for having squandered the blessing of Allah upon him by preserving His Book, until he lost it and forgot it.
As for the second category, it is that the forgetting occurs without turning away or heedlessness, but due to a defect in him, such as quick forgetting, as in this question. It is a defect in him, such as being quick to forget, as in this question, or because he is preoccupied with matters that are necessary in his religion and worldly affairs, and he forgets because of that. This does not harm and does not affect him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once led his Companions in prayer, and he recited for them but forgot a verse from the Qur'an. When he finished, Abu ibn Ka'b reminded him of it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
Why did you not remind me of it? هلا كنت ذكرتنيها
meaning, in the prayer.
And he passed by a reciter who was reciting at night and said:
May Allah have mercy on so-and-so, for he reminded me of a verse I had forgotten رحم الله فلاناً لقد أذكرني بآية كنت أنسيتها
So, the forgetting that comes as a result of human nature is not a reason for a person to be blamed.
