The questioner : Also, a listener says: A man works as a driver for one of the government institutions, and his work involves traveling from one area to another, and the distance from the first area to the second is approximately a day and a night. The question asks: Is it permissible for him to shorten the prayer?
The Shaykh : If the distance mentioned is a day and a night by car, there is no doubt that he shortens the prayer if he travels to the second town. However, if he is in the town and hears the call to prayer, he must respond. The traveler is not exempt from the congregational prayer; rather, Allah the Exalted commanded His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he was with them in jihad in the path of Allah, that a group of the worshippers should stand with him, as mentioned by Allah the Exalted in Surat al-Nisa. This indicates that the congregational prayer is not dropped in the state of fear or the state of travel. Therefore, a person must, if he hears the call while he is in a town he has traveled to, attend the mosque and pray with the people. But if, for example, he is far from the mosque, or if the prayer time has passed for him, he may pray the four-rak'ah prayer as two rak'ahs and shorten the prayer because he is traveling. Yes.
The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh, and bless you for what you have clarified for us and for the honorable brother listeners.
