The questioner : Also, from the questions of the listener Abdullah al-Arabi from Egypt, he says: Regarding the prostration of gratitude, tell us about its prescription, how it is performed, its timing, and whether it has specific dhikr?

The Shaykh : The prostration of gratitude is that which occurs due to the renewal of a blessing or the removal of a calamity.

The questioner : Praise be to Allah.

The Shaykh : It is prescribed because among the guidance of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was that when something came to him that pleased him, he would prostrate to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). The description of this prostration is that you say takbir and prostrate on your seven limbs, and you say "Subhan Rabbi al-A'la" (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High), then you praise Allah (Mighty and Majestic) for what He has bestowed upon you, so you say, for example, "O Allah, to You belongs all praise for this blessing," specifying it, and "O Allah, to You belongs all praise for the calamity You have averted from me," specifying it, and you repeat this. Then you raise your head, and you do not say taslim and you do not say takbir. The prostration of gratitude is performed whenever its cause is found, whether in the night or the day.

The questioner : Praise be to Allah.

The Shaykh : At any time and in any state, even if a person is not in a state of wudu, there is no harm in prostrating, because this may come to a person while he is not in a state of purity. If we were to order him to be in a state of purity, that would cause the prostration to be missed from its cause. If it had been established that purity is necessary for the prostration of gratitude, we would have said that purity is obligatory and that striving for the conditions of a thing is like striving for the thing itself. But it has not been reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that purity is a condition for the prostration of gratitude. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
