The questioner : The listener, S.W.M. from Sudan, sent a message saying: A young man of good character and religion, who observes the Shari'ah of Allah, proposed to me through my father and my maternal uncle. She says: But before the consultation between the families was completed, this young man traveled and did not show up. Three years have passed, and I remained engaged to him during that time. After that, another young man of good character and religion proposed to me. He informed me personally but did not inform my father or my family. He said to me, “I want to know your opinion first, and then I will propose to your father.” I am now confused. Should I wait for the one who proposed to me through my father, or should I agree to the one who proposed to me? I ask you to guide me to the correct solution in accordance with the lenient Islamic Shari'ah. May Allah guide you?

The Shaykh : The correct solution to this matter is that you should accept the proposal of this new suitor, because remaining in wait for a man who left three years ago has no basis. You may choose this new suitor, and he should propose to your guardian. We ask Allah to decree for us and for you what is good and right. Yes.
