If a father who is not committed to religious matters such as fasting, prayer, and zakah becomes angry with his son, and when the son advises him and tries to get him to adhere to the matters of the Shari'ah, does the son sin because of this anger?

The questioner : This is a message received from Muhammad al-Tayyib from Sudan. He sent a message saying: If a father who is not committed to religious matters such as prayer, fasting, and zakah becomes angry with his son when the son advises him and tries to get him to adhere to the matters of the Shari'ah, does the son sin because of this anger? And does this fall under the category of undutifulness to parents? We ask for your guidance on this.

The Shaykh : A son advising his father, or his mother, or his relatives is not undutifulness to the parents nor severing ties with relatives. Rather, this is part of dutifulness to the parents and maintaining family ties. It is obligatory for a person to be dutiful to his parents by advising them and to maintain ties with his relatives by advising them, as Allah the Exalted said to His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)
And warn, [O Muhammad], your closest kindred.
[Ash-Shu'ara 26:214]
. If the parents or relatives become angry at this advice, their anger is upon them, and you bear no responsibility for it. Angering them through advice is not considered severing ties or undutifulness. However, you must be wise in your advice by seeking the circumstances in which they are most likely to respond and accept it, and you should not be harsh, curse, or insult, because this may repel the people to whom you are directing the advice. If you come with the best approach, being sincere to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and obeying His command and advising His servants, there is much good in that, and the anger of whoever becomes angry will not harm you. Have you not seen the story that occurred between Ibrahim al-Khalil and his father in Surat Maryam, where he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his father
O my father, why do you worship that which does not hear and does not see and will not benefit you at all?
[Maryam 19:42]
? Consider this gentleness in speech. He said to him
O my father
, knowing that he was an associate of partners with Allah
why do you worship that which does not hear and does not see and will not benefit you at all? (43) O my father, indeed there has come to me of knowledge that which has not come to you, so follow me; I will guide you to an even path.
[Maryam 19:42-43]
. He did not say, "O my father, I am knowledgeable and you are ignorant." Rather, he said
indeed there has come to me of knowledge that which has not come to you
[Maryam 19:43]
. He did not wish to describe his father as ignorant, even though his father was undoubtedly ignorant of the knowledge that Ibrahim possessed
(44) O my father, do not worship Satan. Indeed Satan has ever been, to the Most Merciful, disobedient. (45) O my father, indeed I fear that there will touch you a punishment from the Most Merciful so you would be to Satan a companion [in Hellfire]."
[Maryam 19:44-45]
. So what did the father say to him?
[His father] said, "Have you no desire for my gods, O Abraham? If you do not desist, I will surely stone you, so avoid me a prolonged time."
[Maryam 19:46]
. Do you find any anger greater than this anger? He said to his son
If you do not desist, I will surely stone you
[Maryam 19:46]
and said
And keep away from me for a while وَاهجُرني مَلِيًّا
for a long time. What did his son say? He said
[Abraham] said, "Peace will be upon you. I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me.
[Maryam 19:47]
. So take a lesson from this story. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is the best of the prophets after Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and he is the one about whom Allah said to His Prophet
Then We revealed to you, [O Muhammad], to follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of those who associate with Allah.
[An-Nahl 16:123]
. And yet, he addressed his polytheist father with this speech and this dialogue, and then he said at the end
(47) [Abraham] said, "Peace will be upon you. I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me. (48) And I will leave you and those you invoke other than Allah and will invoke my Lord. I expect that I will not be in invocation to my Lord unhappy."
[Maryam 19:47-48]
.
The important point is that it is obligatory for you to advise your father regarding the sins he is committing, so that perhaps Allah may grant him repentance and guidance. Even if he becomes angry, do not be concerned by his anger, for his anger is only upon himself. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you, O honorable Shaykh.
