The questioner : You are asking about the authenticity of this hadith from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), in which he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
May Allah have mercy upon a man who prays four before Al-Asr. رحم الله امرأً صلى قبل العصر أربعاً
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 430Hasan (Darussalam)
?

The Shaykh : Yes. There is discussion regarding this hadith. Some scholars have graded it as weak, while others have graded it as good, and I believe some scholars have graded it as authentic. If a person performs this prayer hoping for the reward, it is hoped that he will attain this reward, which is the mercy of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). However, this does not indicate that this prayer is a regular voluntary prayer (rawatib). Therefore, there is no regular voluntary prayer (rawatib) for 'Asr, neither before it nor after it. But if a person prays it, then if the hadith is authentic, he will be the recipient of this supplication from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Yes.
