The Fifth of the Things That Break the Fast: Emission of semen through desire by an act of the fasting person.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The fifth: Emission of semen through desire by an act of the fasting person. Pay attention to the conditions: semen, through desire, third, by an act of the fasting person. If a person emits semen through desire by his own act, his fast is invalid. The evidence is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he said:
and in man's sexual Intercourse (with his wife, ) there is a Sadaqa. They (the Companions) said: Messenger of Allah, is there reward for him who satisfies his sexual passion among us? He said: Tell me, if he were to devote it to something forbidden, would it not be a sin on his part? Similarly, if he were to devote it to something lawful, he should have a reward.
Sahih Muslim 1006
And what is emitted from desire is semen. And Allah the Exalted said in the Holy Hadith regarding the fasting person:
He gives up his food and drink and his desire for My sake يدع طعامه وشرابه وشهوته من أجلي
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 3:27
This is what has appeared to me as evidence that semen breaks the fast. Now, we mentioned the emission of semen. If a fasting person emits pre-seminal fluid, which is not semen, such as if he kissed his wife and emitted pre-seminal fluid, does his fast become invalid? No, because we say that the emission of pre-seminal fluid and semen cannot be analogized to semen, because it is lesser than it. For this reason, semen necessitates the full ritual bath, while pre-seminal fluid does not necessitate the full ritual bath, and it is not permissible to include it with semen. Based on this, we say that pre-seminal fluid does not break the fast, even if it is intentional on the part of the person. We said "through desire" regarding the emission of semen. If it is emitted without desire, such as if a person has an illness that causes semen to be emitted, then it does not break the fast. And we said "by an act of the fasting person," meaning he does it by his own choice. If it is not by his act, then it does not break the fast. How? Is it possible for it to be without an act?

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : By what?

The questioner : By wet dreams.

The Shaykh : No, wet dreams are without choice, but it can happen through thinking. Some people have strong desire and quick emission; as soon as they think about intercourse, they emit. This person who emitted through thinking, but did not move anything, did not touch his private part, did not rub against the ground, and did not do anything at all, but just thought and emitted, does his fast become invalid? No, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah, the Most High, has forgiven my followers what they contemplate on within themselves (i.e. evil thoughts) as long as they do not act upon or speak about them. إن الله تجاوز عن أمتي ما حدثت به أنفسها ما لم تعمل أو تتكلم
Bulugh al-Maram 8:133
And this man did not act and did not speak. Pay attention to the restrictions: emission of what? Emission of semen through desire by an act of the fasting person. Now, what remains for us?
