What is the ruling on a man who prayed with his wife, then raised his head from prostration and forgot to say the takbir aloud, and she did not hear him, so she continued praying with him without making up what she missed with her husband?

The questioner : What is the ruling on the imam if he forgets to raise his voice for the takbir in ruku' until he prostrates, and the follower misses the ruku'?

The Shaykh : Do you mean that he forgot to raise his voice, not that he did not say the takbir?

The questioner : He forgot to say it aloud, then he prostrated, and he also forgot to say the takbirs for rising from bowing and for prostrating.

The Shaykh : This was in the mosque, and there was no congregation, just a regular prayer?

The questioner : In the house.

The Shaykh : This can happen.

The questioner : I mean, my wife was behind me, and I did not think she was praying, so I did not realize it until I was already prostrating, and the bowing passed her by. So what is required of her now, and what is required of me?

The Shaykh : Okay, how did the situation go? Did she not see the bowing and the prostration?

The questioner : No, she did not see it. It appears, and Allah knows best, that either I was prostrating and she was prostrating, and I was in the first prostration.

The Shaykh : I was prostrating and said the takbir, and she did not notice. Is that possible?
Another questioner: What I understood is that you were bowing, and when you raised your head from bowing after hearing, you went down to prostration.

The Shaykh : Okay, in any case, but we need to visualize this strange incident: how did it happen?

The questioner : Probably, and Allah knows best, I do not remember if one of them passed her by, either the bowing or the prostration. The most likely scenario is that I prostrated the first prostration, she remained prostrating, then I prostrated again and I was saying the takbir.

The Shaykh : Okay, so what did she do after that?

The questioner : She caught up.

The Shaykh : She made up for it?

The questioner : Yes, she stood up.

The Shaykh : No, I do not mean she stood up; did she prostrate two prostrations or not?

The questioner : No.

The Shaykh : So she must repeat the prayer, and you, as the imam, must prostrate the prostration for forgetfulness because you forgot to say the takbir aloud, especially since this forgetfulness resulted in invalidating the prayer of the one following you. So, as long as she did not make up for the mistake that occurred because of you, and that is, even if you had stood up for the second or third rak'ah, what would have happened if she had continued the prayer in her own prayer, performed the two prostrations, then stood up and found you standing, her prayer would have been valid. But since she did not perform the two prostrations, one prostration passed her by.

The questioner : What is the ruling on the imam if he forgets to raise his voice for the takbir in ruku' until he prostrates, and the follower misses the ruku'?

The Shaykh : Both are called pillars. So if she missed the bowing, just as if she missed the prostration, both are pillars of the prayer. But the problem is resolved by making up for the pillar that was missed by the one behind the imam, as long as the cause is the imam. But if the cause is from her, her prayer is invalid. For example, if you prostrated the first prostration and raised your head, and she or someone else raised their head, and she was between the two prostrations, when the imam prostrated the second prostration, she stood up and caught up with him while he was standing, in this case her prayer is invalid, and there is no room for making up for it.
