The Shaykh : The first hadith from the book has weakness in it, so we should avoid it. As for the one that follows it, it is authentic, and it is his statement: “And from 'Uqbah as well, meaning Ibn 'Amir, that he came in a group of ten to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he pledged allegiance to nine of them, but held back from one man among them. They asked, ‘What is his matter?’ He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There is an amulet on his arm. So the man cut off the amulet, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) pledged allegiance with him. Then he said, “Whoever hangs up an amulet has committed shirk (associating partners with Allah).” إن في عضده تميمة فقطع الرجل التميمة فبايعه رسول الله صلى الله وآله وسلم ثم قال من علق فقد أشرك
” Ahmad and al-Hakim narrated it, and the wording is al-Hakim’s, and the narrators of Ahmad are trustworthy. He explains the strange terms of the hadith by saying: “The amulet is said to be a bead that they used to hang up, believing that it would ward off calamities from them. Holding this belief is ignorance and misguidance, for there is no protector except Allah and no repeller of harm other than Him.” Al-Khattabi mentioned this. We return to the hadith: 'Uqbah came in a group of ten, or a group of ten came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), meaning to pledge allegiance to him. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) pledged allegiance to nine of them and held back from one man among them. They asked, “What is his matter?” Meaning, they turned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the question: “Why, O Messenger of Allah, did you refrain from pledging allegiance to this man, when he is a Muslim like us?” He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “There is an amulet on his arm.” This man’s Islam is incomplete. Why? Because he had hung an amulet on his arm as a protection. When this man, whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had refused to pledge allegiance with, realized his sin and his error, he cut off the amulet. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) pledged allegiance with him after this Muslim man responded to the ruling of Islam. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified the ruling on this hanging of this amulet by saying:
Whoever hangs up an amulet has committed shirk (associating partners with Allah). من علق فقد أشرك
