What is the ruling on a man having intercourse with his wife in her rear, and is there any advice for them?

The questioner : May Allah reward the honorableThe Shaykh : This is a matter that is frequently discussed by some people, especially young men who do not know the straight path, complaining that they sometimes have intercourse with their wives in their rears.

The Shaykh : I seek refuge in Allah.

The questioner : So what is your advice? And what is the legal ruling in this matter? I ask for guidance, as the talk among those young men about this has become widespread.

The Shaykh : Yes, having intercourse with a woman in her rear is forbidden and is one of the major sins. The Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "If a man is known for this, it is obligatory to separate him from his wife". Some scholars called it minor sodomy. It is a deviation in religion and foolishness in intellect, for how does a person turn away from what Allah created for him to a place of filth, stench, and foul smell? Is this not a reversal of the truth? Lot said to his people: And Allah the Exalted said: Where is the place of sowing, the rear or the front? Yes, the front, because it is the place of offspring. How does one turn away from what Allah commanded to another matter from the commands of Satan, may Allah protect us? My advice to these young men and to non-young men who have been afflicted with this is to fear Allah the Mighty and Majestic, and to abandon this matter. Allah has provided for them an alternative that is better than it, which is for a person to approach his wife in the place of sowing, in the private parts. He may approach her facing forward or facing backward, meaning he may approach her facing forward, with her on her back, or facing backward, with her on her stomach. The matter is broad in this regard. For this reason, Allah the Exalted said: But he must not have intercourse with her in the rear; the intercourse must be in the front. Yes.
