Ruling on Intercourse with One's Wife in the Anus

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a message from the sender Muhammad Majid Sulayman. He says in his message: My question is about intercourse with one's wife in her anus. I have read in the book al-Mughni by Ibn Qudamah, Part 7, page 22, in the chapter: "It is not permissible to have intercourse with one's wife in the anus, according to the opinion of the majority of the scholars, including 'Ali, 'Abdullah, Abu al-Darda', Ibn 'Abbas, 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr, and Abu Hurayrah. Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, Abu Bakr ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, Mujahid, 'Ikrimah, al-Shafi'i, the people of opinion (Ashab al-Ra'y), and Ibn al-Mundhir also held this view. Its permissibility has been reported from Ibn 'Umar, Zayd ibn Aslam, Nafi', and Malik. It is reported that Malik said: 'I have not found anyone I follow in my religion who doubts that it is lawful.' The people of Iraq among Malik's followers deny this. Those who permitted it argued for it with the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Your wives are a place of sowing of seed for you, so come to your place of cultivation however you wish
[al-Baqarah: 223], and His saying:
(5) And they who guard their private parts (6) Except from their wives or those their right hands possessوَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَ ۝ إِلَّا عَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِمْ أوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ
[al-Mu'minun: 5-6]. What is the opinion of the religion regarding those who permitted it and Imam Malik's argument with these two noble verses? I ask for clarification of the ruling of the religion on this matter, and on the statements of Imam Malik, Ibn 'Umar, Zayd ibn Aslam, and Nafi'. Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy.
Answer: This issue is one where the authentic evidences from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) clearly indicate its prohibition. It is the issue of intercourse in the anus. This is the known form of sodomy, and it is called minor sodomy. It is forbidden. This issue is forbidden, an abomination, and one of the major sins. Hadiths have come from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) warning against this and clarifying that intercourse in the anus of a wife is forbidden and an abomination. The majority of scholars, and the preponderant view among them, held this opinion based on the hadiths reported on this matter. Among them is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Allah will not look at a man who has intercourse with a man or a woman through the anus.
Bulugh al-Maram 8:57
, narrated by al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa'i with a sound chain, and by Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on them). And among them is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
God is not ashamed of the truth. Do not have intercourse with women through the anus.
Mishkat al-Masabih 3192
— and in another wording:
in their anusesفي أعجازهن
. It is also reported from him (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who has intercourse with a woman through her anus is accursed.
Bulugh al-Maram 8:56
. There are many hadiths, all of which indicate the prohibition of intercourse in the anus.
As for His saying (Exalted and Majestic is He):
Your wives are a place of sowing of seed for you, so come to your place of cultivation however you wish
[al-Baqarah: 223], it is as the hadiths indicate: the harvest (harth) is the private part. This is the place of the harvest; it is the front. The anus is not a place of harvest, but rather a place of filth... a place of excrement. So it is not the place of the harvest. The harvest of a person is in the front of his wife... the place of birth... the place of sowing, where he has intercourse with her... the seed is obtained from the semen, and then if Allah wills something, that semen unites with her semen and a child comes. So the front is the place of the harvest, not the anus. The anus is a place of filth... a place of impurity. The front is the place of the harvest. And in another hadith:
facing forward...
. When the Jews said: "If a man approaches his wife from her rear in her front, the child will be blue-eyed," Allah refuted them and revealed His saying:
Your wives are a place of sowing of seed for you, so come to your place of cultivation however you wish
[Al-Baqarah 2:223]
. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If it is in a single orifice
Sahih Ibn Hibban 16:140
, meaning: in the front. It is the valve, meaning: the place of the harvest.
So the conclusion is that the authentic hadiths and the statements of the scholars of knowledge, from the Companions and those after them, all indicate the prohibition of intercourse in the anus. As for what is reported from Ibn 'Umar that he permitted it, it is an error attributed to Ibn 'Umar. The truth is that it is not established from Ibn 'Umar. Rather, Ibn 'Umar meant that it is permissible for her to be approached from her rear in her front, meaning: he approaches her from her rear in her front, meaning she is facing the rear, for example, on her side or like one in prostration, and he approaches her from the direction of her rear in her front, in the private part, not in the anus itself. Some people made a mistake and thought he permitted intercourse in the anus. Rather, he meant that she is approached from the rear in her front, not in her anus. This is what Ibn 'Umar and others from whom this was reported intended. Even if we assume that some of the Successors or those after them explicitly permitted it and were mistaken or in error in this, their statement is rejected and invalid, and no attention should be paid to it, because it contradicts the noble verse and contradicts the authentic hadiths. Every statement that contradicts what Allah and His Messenger said is obligatory to discard and obligatory to abandon. It is not permissible to oppose the established Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with it, just as it is not permissible to oppose what Allah the Mighty and Majestic said with it. So Allah said:
Your wives are a place of sowing of seed for you, so come to your place of cultivation however you wish
[Al-Baqarah 2:223]
. The harvest is only in the front. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
God is not ashamed of the truth. Do not have intercourse with women through the anus.
Mishkat al-Masabih 3192
. And he said:
Allah will not look at a man who has intercourse with a man or a woman through the anus.
Bulugh al-Maram 8:57
. It is also reported from him (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who has intercourse with a woman through her anus is accursed.
Bulugh al-Maram 8:56
. It has come in the hadith of Ibn 'Umar and in the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr with a good chain, both as a mawquf (stopping at a Companion) and a marfu' (traced to the Prophet), that he was asked about intercourse in the anus, and he said: "(Minor sodomy)."
So the conclusion is that it is forbidden by explicit text and by the statement of the scholars, which is like consensus. What is reported from Ibn 'Umar, or Zayd ibn Aslam, or Malik, all of it has no basis or truth. It is not established from Malik that he permitted it, as far as we know. Rather, they are delusions and errors from some of the narrators from him and those who claim affiliation with him. As for what is preserved from him (may Allah have mercy on him), it is the prohibition and the impermissibility of intercourse in the anus. Likewise, what is preserved from Ibn 'Umar is the prohibition, not the permissibility. Rather, some people were deluded by some narrations from him that she is approached from her rear in her front, so they thought he permitted intercourse in the anus. Rather, he meant that she is approached from the direction of the rear in the front itself... in the private part itself, not in the anus, which is the place of filth. This is the truth, and it is like consensus among the scholars. The disagreement on this from some of the Salaf is anomalous, and no attention should be paid to it, nor should it be relied upon, for it is an abomination and invalid. Yes...
