The Reasons for the Prohibition of Wearing Trousers

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : If we assume that trousers have become common among all nations, it is not necessary for us to wear them, but it is necessary that we intentionally differ from the disbelievers in this clothing, so that our dress is not like theirs. This is the first defect in trousers, which is either imitating them or failing to differ from them. Is that clear up to this point?
There is a second defect, and this is much, much more important. It is that they cover the private parts, and the disbelievers do not have these etiquettes; they do not have the concept of the woman's private parts or the man's private parts. None of these things are in their religion, along with the alteration and change involved. As for the Muslim, he has restrictions and conditions. Women have private parts, men have private parts, and young children have private parts, and so on. So when a Muslim wears trousers, he covers the smaller private part, and sometimes the larger private part, especially if he prays a unit and prostrates. Here, the larger private part becomes exposed, and this is not permissible in the religion of Islam. Therefore, every Muslim should change this clothing to Islamic clothing. When trousers first became common among Muslims, and they were still keen to adhere to Islamic etiquettes, they added something extra to the foreign trousers. They made it look like trousers in shape, but in terms of not covering the private parts, it was like the sarwal. In our region of Sham, they used to call them the French trousers, or the trousers... what is it? I think it has another name that I have forgotten: the muhakkimaji. Yes.

The questioner : The first one is the French one.

The Shaykh : Yes, and then this Islamic one is called the muhakkimaji. Why? Because the effendis who were employees in the Shari'ah courts were the first to be infected by the imitation of the disbelievers, but they still had religion, especially regarding prayer. So they added a widening to the trousers, making them like this... what do they call them?

The questioner : Pleats or folds.

The Shaykh : Pleats. So at that time, the trousers would not grip the thigh or the buttocks; it was all like the sarwal. But instead of having a flap, it had front buttons. However, this went away with time; it became a thing of the past, and we no longer see these tight trousers.

The questioner : It has come back as a fashion now.

The Shaykh : Yes, it has come back as a fashion.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : We mentioned earlier that we saw a fashion called Sharleston in our region. Have you heard this name? It is strange; it is tight here and wide below, wider than the sarwal, going up and coming down.

The questioner : An inverted sarwal...

The Shaykh : Glory be to Allah! This is Satan playing with the children of Adam. The important thing is that the Muslim must maintain his Islamic identity. I have said on some occasions like this one that if a Muslim were, for example, picked up by helicopter and dropped in Paris, the disbelievers would have to say, "This is a Muslim," because his dress is different from the dress of the disbelievers. Where are the Muslims now with any Islamic dress? In Saudi Arabia, for example, we used to see people, even women, boarding airplanes, and then you would see them completely changed in appearance. He was Arab, but he became Western. He had no makeup, but now he has makeup. He had no jacket, but now he has a jacket. He was wearing a headscarf and a turban, but they removed all of that, and it became a secret, so he looks exactly like a foreigner. If this indicates anything, as they say today, it indicates that Muslims today do not take pride in their religion. This is a calamity of the age. So Muslims should review their reality and return to acting in accordance with the Shari'ah of their Lord, for they have no salvation except by returning to Islam, as came in the authentic hadith: indeed
When you enter into the inah transaction, hold the tails of oxen, are pleased with agriculture, and give up conducting jihad (struggle in the way of Allah). Allah will make disgrace prevail over you, and will not withdraw it until you return to your original religion.
Sunan Abi Dawud 3462Sahih (Al-Albani)
. So we ask Allah (Mighty and Majestic) to inspire us with guidance, to teach us the religion of our Lord, and to inspire us to act upon what He has taught us. We ask Allah for that.
