The Shaykh : The eleventh hadith, which is the last in this chapter, is from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This “neck” refers to a flame of fire that emerges from the Fire in a solid form, possessing two eyes with which it sees, two ears with which it hears, and a tongue with which it speaks. It says: “I have been entrusted with three groups: those who set up another god alongside Allah, every arrogant tyrant, and the image-makers.” Al-Tirmidhi narrated it and said: “It is a good, authentic, and unique hadith.” He explains the unusual term in the hadith by saying: “‘Anq’ (neck), with the ‘ayn’ and the nun’ in the state of dammah, means a group or a side of the Fire.”
This last hadith contains an element of strangeness in terms of the information it includes regarding matters of the unseen, which one must believe in. It states that Allah (Mighty and Majestic), by His power, will bring forth a part of the Fire of Hell that takes the form of a head with two eyes, two ears, and a tongue with which it speaks. It will speak and say that it has been entrusted with tormenting three groups: those who set up another god alongside Allah, every arrogant, stubborn tyrant, and the image-makers. This hadith is the tenth of the hadiths in the chapter; I have read them all to you except for the ninth, which has a weakness in its chain of narration. The hadiths we have read suffice for the chapter in place of it. As we said, the terms “image-making” and “image-makers” are general; therefore, in their generality, they include three-dimensional images and non-three-dimensional images. However, looking at the occasion of the revelation of some of them indicates that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) only said this in connection with non-three-dimensional images.
