The questioner : Is leaving the cutting of hair and nails during the ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah until the Muslim slaughters his sacrificial animal a Sunnah reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? And does that include the family, meaning the family of the one who offers the sacrifice?
The Shaykh : It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that he said: meaning the ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1523Sahih (Darussalam) and in a narration: This is a prohibition, and the original ruling regarding a prohibition is that it is forbidden until evidence is established that it is not for prohibition. Based on this, it is not permissible for a person who intends to offer a sacrifice, once the month of Dhu al-Hijjah has entered, to take anything from his hair, skin, or nails until he offers the sacrifice. The one addressed by this is the one who offers the sacrifice, not the one for whom it is offered. Based on this, it is not forbidden for the family to do so, because the family are those for whom the sacrifice is offered, not those who offer it.
If someone were to ask: What is the wisdom in leaving the cutting during the ten days? We say: The answer to that is from two angles. The first angle: The wisdom is the prohibition of the Messenger (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him). There is no doubt that the prohibition of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding something is wisdom, and His command regarding something is wisdom. This is sufficient for every believer, and by His saying, the Exalted:[An-Nur 24:51] And in the authentic hadith from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), a woman asked her: “Why does the menstruating woman make up the fast but not the prayer?” She said: meaning during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) Sahih Muslim 335c This angle is the strongest angle and the decisive angle that cannot be objected to, which is that it can be said regarding the rulings of the Shari'ah that the wisdom in them is that Allah and His Messenger commanded them.
The second angle regarding the prohibition of taking hair, nails, and skin during these ten days: Perhaps, and Allah knows best, it is so that the people in the cities have a type of participation with those in the state of ihram for Hajj and 'Umrah in these days, because it is prescribed for the one in ihram for Hajj or 'Umrah to avoid taking from the hair and nails, and Allah knows best.
The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
The Shaykh : It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that he said:
When the ten days enter
إذا دخل العشرand wants to slaughter a sacrifice he should not take from his hair nor from his nails.
وأراد أحدكم أن يضحي فلا يأخذن من شعره، ولا من ظفره شيئاًnor anything from his skin
ولا من بشرته شيئاًIf someone were to ask: What is the wisdom in leaving the cutting during the ten days? We say: The answer to that is from two angles. There is no doubt that the prohibition of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding something is wisdom, and His command regarding something is wisdom. This is sufficient for every believer, and by His saying, the Exalted:
The only statement of the [true] believers when they are called to Allah and His Messenger to judge between them is that they say, "We hear and we obey."
That used to happen to us
