Is it permissible to take a salary in jihad, even if it exceeds one's need, in order to save for marriage or to spend on one's family?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : Another question: Is it permissible to take the salary in jihad, even if it is more than what one needs? For example, I work as a teacher in the battlefield of jihad, and they give me a salary for this work so that I can spend on my family or so that I can get married. Is it permissible to take the salary? Or to save it so that I can get married? Or if, for example, two thousand rupees are enough for me, and they give me four thousand, is it permissible to save the remaining two thousand?

The Shaykh : If what is given to you is not for a bribe, or for a special favor, or through an intermediary, but rather it is an assessment by the responsible superiors who are in charge of you or of those like you, then we say to you, as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to 'Umar ibn al-Khattab when the war spoils would come to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he would distribute them among his Companions, and he would single out 'Umar for a portion of them, so 'Umar would say: "O Messenger of Allah, give it to someone who is more deserving of it than I am." And what would be of his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying but that he would say to him:
O 'Umar, if Allah has brought you wealth and your soul is not eager for it, take it and possess it, for it is only a provision that Allah has sent to you. يا عمر ما أتاك الله من مالٍ ونفسك غير مشرفةٍ إليه فخذه وتموله ، فإنما هو رزق ساقه الله إليك
So, having understood this, the meaning of the answer is very clear: with the aforementioned conditions, it is lawful for you. Then, if the money you are given is more than what you need, even if you are married and have a family, you are able, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in some of the authentic narrations in the aforementioned hadith of 'Umar:
Possess it and give it in charity. تموله وتصدق به
So in that case, you can utilize this money to earn wages that you would not have been able to attain had this money not come to you.

The questioner : But is it permissible to save it, meaning to leave it idle in the bank?

The Shaykh : Any money that is saved, and especially as I said, if the restriction is still in place for the sake of marriage, this is in the path of Allah. Then I return to say that even if you are married, in that case, this saved money is permissible if you pay its zakah every year.
