Is it permissible for a man to pray sitting down due to some pain in his knee?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Al-Halabi : The second question is similar, meaning it contains a bit of a riddle or something like that, as I understood it. It asks: Is it permissible for a man to pray while sitting due to some pain in his knee, while at the same time he is able to climb a hundred steps but unable to descend five steps?

The Shaykh : And he is unable...
Al-Halabi : ...to descend five steps.

The Shaykh : Without delving deeply into the scenario you described, which you said resembles a riddle, we will say:
offer prayer in standing condition; if you are unable to do so, then in sitting condition: if you are then at your side صلّ قائما فإن لم تستطع فقاعدا فإن لم تستطع فعلى جنب
Sunan Abi Dawud 952Sahih (Al-Albani)
If he is able to pray standing, then it is not permissible for him to pray sitting. And what concerns us is if he descends five steps.
Al-Halabi : Meaning, he knows his own condition best.
Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness, بل الإنسان على نفسه بصيرة
[Al-Qiyamah 75:14]

The Shaykh : Because regarding this climbing and descending, healthy people cannot feel the difference between climbing and descending. Personally, for example, descending is easier for me than climbing regarding the knee, but another person might be the opposite. So why do we complicate matters by trying to understand the details of things in which people's abilities differ? But we answer with the rule by which the Wise Lawgiver has made things easy for us, which is:
offer prayer in standing condition; if you are unable to do so, then in sitting condition: if you are then at your side صل قائما فإن لم تستطع فقاعدا فإن لم تستطع فعلى جنب
Sunan Abi Dawud 952Sahih (Al-Albani)

Al-Halabi : May Allah reward you with good. May Allah bless you, our Shaykh.
