The questioner : He saysThe questioner : Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has commanded us to cooperate in righteousness and piety; so what is the correct concept of collective work? Because some Muslims say: There must be a ruler and obedience, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 1835c.
The Shaykh : This is an authentic hadith. So the successor of the Messenger (peace be upon him), who appoints a ruler, must be obeyed. The call is more specific than the evidence—pardon me—the call is broader than the evidence; the evidence is more specific than the call. The evidence relates to the supreme ruler, the caliph, whom the Muslims must choose. This hadith obligates us to strive earnestly to appoint a Muslim ruler over us who rules among us with what Allah and His Messenger have commanded. When this ruler appoints a ruler over us, it is obligatory to obey him, as came in the hadith of al-'Arba' ibn Sari'ah, which is a well-known hadith. The point of it is his saying (peace be upon him): to the end of the hadith. In it, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2676Sahih (Darussalam), Who appointed him? The ruler whom the Muslims chose as their caliph. As for these scattered groups, where every group has a leader, and every leader is pledged allegiance by his group; this is what increases division among the Muslims. The clustering and partisanship that increases their division, separation, sects, and parties. And Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says: [Ar-Rum 30:31-32].
The Shaykh: Perhaps many of you remember the hadith of Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, which begins:Mishkat al-Masabih 5382. In the completion of this hadith, Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) asks the Messenger (peace be upon him) about his position if there is smoke and division. He says: If the Muslims have an imam, then hold fast to him. He said: What if they have no imam and no group? He said: —or as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said. Therefore, it is not permissible to cluster and form parties among the Muslims, because what they are in of division is sufficient for them, which seems like a natural matter due to their distance from acting upon the Book and the Sunnah. This division is sufficient for them, so it is not permissible for us to make it a system, and to make it a party, rather parties; every party rejoices in what they have.
