If a man performs Hajj more than once, does he perform Hajj on behalf of his father who performed the Hajj of Islam, and the son doubts its validity? And does he have the same reward as his father if he performs Hajj on his behalf?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : A young man asks, saying that he has performed the obligatory Hajj more than once, and Allah the Exalted has made it easy for him to perform the obligatory Hajj again. He has a father whom Allah has taken to Himself, and the father had also performed the obligatory Hajj, but the son doubts the validity of the father's Hajj because he was not learned and did not stay overnight at Muzdalifah, and Allah knows best, and consequently did not reach Fajr there. So, should the son perform Hajj on behalf of his father now, or perform Hajj for himself?

The Shaykh : He performs Hajj for himself as a voluntary act?

The questioner : As a voluntary act, yes, because he has performed Hajj more than once.

The Shaykh : We say the answer is according to what is most likely in his opinion. If it is most likely in his opinion that what you mentioned is the case, namely his inability to perform the pillars of Hajj and its rituals, then he performs Hajj on his behalf; otherwise, he does not. And when I say he performs Hajj on his behalf, it is with the intention of discharging the obligation from him. As for performing Hajj on his behalf as a voluntary act, that door is open. Do you see the difference?

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : That is, here regarding his father, or more clearly, regarding his father's Hajj, there are two images or situations:
The first situation is that he strongly doubts the validity of his father's Hajj, so he performs the Hajj of Islam on his behalf.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : The second situation is that his father's Hajj is a valid Hajj, so he performs Hajj on his behalf as a voluntary act. Do you understand how?

The questioner : The question arises here: which is better, that he perform Hajj for his father as a voluntary act, or that he perform Hajj for himself as a voluntary act?

The Shaykh : It is according to his own desire. If he wants the greater reward for his father, he intends his father with his Hajj. And if he wants the greater reward for himself, he performs Hajj for himself, and some of the reward of this Hajj comes to his father because he was the cause of his existence.

The questioner : Yes, is it said that he has the same reward as his father, meaning the reward of a Hajj or 'Umrah, for example?

The Shaykh : The reward of his father?

The questioner : The same as the reward of his father.

The Shaykh : Here it is the opposite; it is his son.

The questioner : Is it said that the son has the same reward as his father?

The Shaykh : It is the opposite, my brother.

The questioner : If he performs Hajj on his behalf as a voluntary act, is that the intended meaning?

The Shaykh : The same as the reward of his father; the father did not perform Hajj.

The questioner : If the son performs Hajj on behalf of his father?

The Shaykh : My dear, I am going to tell you, in my opinion, the correct phrasing: does the father have the same reward as the son? Because the son is the one who will perform Hajj

The questioner : on behalf of his father.

The Shaykh : So, does his father have the same reward as his son? Not the father, because the father is not the one performing the act.

The questioner: Allahu Akbar.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : Is the concept understood, or are you just accepting it for the sake of argument?

The questioner : That is, the original reward belongs to the son...?

The Shaykh : Wait, let us see.

The questioner : The original reward belongs to the son?

The Shaykh : Yes, so does the father have the same reward as his son? Not whether the son has the same reward as his father.

The questioner : So, does the father have the same reward as his son?

The Shaykh : I tell you, this answer is according to what? The son's intention. If the son made this Hajj on behalf of his father, then the father has the reward, exactly the reward of his son. And if he made the reward for himself, then the father has some of it.

The questioner : Shaykh:
And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives وأن ليس للإنسان إلا ما سعى
[An-Najm 53:39]

The Shaykh: Yes ... .
